Dear real and virtual friends. I encourage you to read this. It explains what is happening right now, and also gives a concrete idea of what we each can and should do now. And I'm hosting "The Peacebuilding Open House" 5 days this month that you are invited to join further down. First time on Saturday 13.03 at 13.03 in nature in the countryside, a little north of Sorø. There will also be treasure hunts.
But ... what is happening right now is a "deja vu" from my time as a soldier in Serbian-occupied Croatia in 1992. A Serbian family father told this story with tears in his eyes.
"Our best friends were our neighbors. We helped each other build, ate together and our children played together almost every day. They were Croats, we were Serbs. We had a good life. One day the 'splitting actions' started. First was the political insults of Serbs against Croats and vice versa, but then it turned into demonstrations and quickly turned into extremist horrific acts on the one hand, which were avenged by the other side. My neighbor and I talked about it, but said it was just some small extremist groups. But it escalated lightning fast, and eventually ... "he pauses. Tears run down his cheeks, he looks down and his voice is choked with tears. "Eventually, my children and I joined the crowd that put our best friends' house on fire and we were in the crowd chasing them out of town. As if they were plague-stricken dogs ... just because they were Croats ..."
The Serb's story and the image of his face as he looks up with tears in his shameful eyes, while his children and wife (who did not understand English) very quietly look down ... that memory still brings tears to my eyes.
But I fear the memory is also a picture from a not distant future. Today I saw a post about a Muslim who had been given 200 hours of community service in punishment for participating in an "immigrant gang r**e" of a young Swedish girl. It automatically raises fears, emotions and hatred towards "the whole group of immigrants". I can feel it in myself, even though deep down I know that the large group of immigrants are vehemently distancing themselves from the act, and undoubtedly themselves would have sentenced the ra**st a much harsher punishment. But they cannot, because they have to respect our laws and courts, and therefore they are deprived of the opportunity for the self-justice that could have given us a sense of justice. At the same time, a Danish 30-year-old mother of 2 small children risk 3 years in prison for saying "Shall we go out and smash the city in the non-violent way" at a legal peaceful demonstration. It raises anger, of course.
Unfortunately, I can mention many other "groupings" and "splitting actions" that are going on right now. BLM, LGBT, Climate movements, Vaccine movements, Women's movements, Freedom movements ... etc., They all help to fill wood to a fire that one little spark can ignite. And if that happens, then it may suddenly be ourselves who follow the crowd and with the torch in hand set fire to our neighbor's house. Or the other way around. We must not let that happen - we must at least try to avoid it.
I have neither power, influence nor a voice that can reach many, and the few who read this probably do not have power and voice either. Yet we are not powerless, for we can take individual action to prevent ourselves, each and every one, from becoming part of a new version of the tragic story of the Serbian family father.
I admit that there are so many forces at play that I feel the "wave of conflict" is unstoppable. But I think you can "build a dome" (or a ship, if you will) that protects you from "drowning in the wave". I also believe that if we are many who do the same thing and do it at the same time, then we can create such a big "counter-wave" that we can stop or reduce the wave that threatens us all right now.
But we can not do that by gathering for large visible demonstrations in the big cities. The police will have to be there in large numbers, and the extremist forces will have the optimal opportunities to "add energy to their movements"; a cocktail that can make our inner feelings and the battle flare up even more.
My first call, therefore, is to move demonstrations out into the woods. There are neither politicians, frightened citizens nor buildings. The police will have nothing else to protect but the trees and the protesters themselves. And then bring a blanket and a picnic basket with beer, wine, water and packed lunch. And instead of just talking about what politicians should do, which we still have very little influence on, talk about what WE can do.
And the first thing we CAN do is tell the story of the Serbian family father, because it also provides a simple answer to what we can do as the first step. Namely, to talk together and unite locally about one thing: To avoid unrest and conflict in our own small local communities.
It is far from certain that this can be done everywhere because we are already so divided, but it is easy for anyone to start a small local group that can grow quickly. The most important thing is that it is kept apolitical and that everyone can come without having to "identify themselves". And it is important that it is cozy and gives people a feeling of safety. A good piece of advice is to set a fixed weekly place and time.
Personally, I will be holding "The Peacebuilding Open House" with three themes 5 days in the month of March. People can come anonymously.
-----------
Saturday 13.03 at 13.03, and the same time the following Saturdays 20.3 and 27.3
Tuesday 16.03 at 16.03, and the same time the following Tuesday 23.3.
Every day there will be an open house until 22:00 - and there will be the possibility of accommodation.
The address is: Orebovej 18, Stenlille
Bring: What you want to eat and drink, preferably something that can be shared. I do not take payment, but it will be appreciated if I do not have to think about food myself. There is a kitchen.
Saturday 13.03 at 13.03 a "Treasure hunt for both children and adults" is also launched, which I have personally put DKK 500 in. It is online, but the treasure is buried "Somewhere in the world". It is possible, that it can be at a place in the beautiful forest and nature near Orebo. Maybe the treasure will grow if some guests will provide a "tax gift". It does not have to be money.
The topics are, in addition to regular coffee cozy talk, to talk about:
1) "Should parents recommend their children and adolescents to be vaccinated against corona. What can be done. Is there a free choice?"
2) "Personal finance - how can you secure yourself in the best possible way - focus on" Land with Water and People (Eco-communities, etc.) "
3) "What can we do to protect ourselves and our communities?"
Notes on themes
ad 1) "Should parents recommend their children and adolescents to be vaccinated against corona. What can be done. Is there a free choice?" has the purpose of maming parents more confident in advising their children - or taking the decision on their behalf.
It is with reference to the DR article of March 10, 2021 "Corona vaccines for children are on the way - but both parents and experts are hesitant". Also referring to the fact that vaccine passports are on the way (have arrived), but that Iceland now approves entrants who have an approved certificate of having been infected with Corona and in a video with Mette F. (Danish Prime Minister) and Netanyahu (Israelian Prime Minister), he emphasizes that those who have been infected , also gets a vaccine passport.
ad 2) "Personal finance - how can you best secure yourself - focus on" Land with Water and People "
This is with reference to fears of inflation, rising unemployment and general economic insecurity. The primary topic is about "Land with Water and People" (Eco-society, but in many forms), because it can both be one of the safer investments - and because crisis, financial and general insecurity and the opportunity to study and work from home get many to seek closer together where they can "build and live and cultivate and grow" in many kinds of communities.
ad 3) "What can we do to secure ourselves and our communities?"
Focus on how to organize yourself in the local community and create increased local prosperity, welfare and security. Sharing economy, hanging gardens and preparation to handle locally some of the societal tasks that may risk disappearing if unrest and crime and socio-economic crisis arise. Including neighborhood and collaboration on areas such as health, care, education, entrepreneurship, local resource banks, transportation and crime protection.
NB: I personally provide DKK 500 to start a treasure hunt, but I naturally hope that some will help with "Treasure gifts" or with finding sponsors, so we get more local treasure hunts going around the world. The treasure hunt is inspired by "TheGreat2021Treasurehunt" (Searchable on YouTube)
NB2: I can be a little firm if you do not respect good tone, let others speak, show appreciation to each other (also to the host) and in general appear constructive, positive and "are a proper person". Here we come to lift each other up - let ideas flow - and give and receive smiles. The opposite is not accepted - you may be asked to leave the place or go for a walk, and you must know and respect that.
NB3: You are welcome to write or call (I like that people call), or just come unannounced. If there are more than we have space for, then we will find a solution. Maybe we can split up into groups, some walking in the woods while others talk inside, or maybe there is someone else who has a house nearby.
NB4: It will be nice if others arrange something similar at the same times. Then maybe we can greet other groups on the phone or digitally while we are together - and maybe also afterwards - maybe arrange cross group visits.
Kind regards,
Olav Lange Hansen
