Neutron Star 4 is the current version. In the next couple of days i will build a guide for using the NS4 here. The NS4 is similar in function to its predecessor NS3, it has exact same size, and it has the same functions, with a few differences.

Differences.
NS3 is powered by 10 - 18V DC, nominally 15V. But NS4 is powered with 10V - 15V DC nominally 12V. The current consumption is the same about 250 mA. (Including the heater). The rail capacitors of 100 uF in NS3 has now been upgraded to 1000 uF in NS4. This gives a slightly better sound performance. The signal traces of the PCB layout has been optimized, with round corners, and shorter signal path. This gives lower susceptibility to airborn digital noise. The preregulators have been replaced with ultra low noise low drop regulators from Analog Devices or ROHM Semiconductor. This is to facilitate the functionality down to 10V power supply.

A customer asked me, is there an optimal way to connect a Neutron Star clock to a player, with a long (0.3-0.4m) coax cable? The answer is: Yes but you have to make impedance matching on the far side of the cable. If no such matchiong is made, you can risk standing waves inside the cable, which will create spikes or fade the signal. The cable is 75 Ohms, so if you connect a 56R resistor to the far end of the cable, the resistor will "eat" any surplus signal, coming out of the cable, so no standing wave can occur. However this also lowers the amplitude to about half, so you need the existing gate in the player to act as amplifier. This is done by sending the signal through a 0.1uF MKT capacitor. If you are using 11.2896 or 16.9344 MHz clocks, this is not necessary, but for higher frequencies it can become beneficial for optimal performance of the Neutron Star clock.

Gathering parts for a new DAC project, and testing out some of the circuits. The project is a custom build for a friend, of a R2R ladder DAC, with triode based analog stage (based on 6N6P). The ladder DAC itself is the GD Audio DAC from Audiophonics, i'm excited to hear how it's going to sound. As DC blockers there is a couple of Miflex copper foil / Paper in oil caps, which in earlier DAC projects have proven very successful in detail and balance. I will post here on facebook, as the project progresses. Next step is designing a PCB to put it all together.

Doing a bit of old fashion audio DIY this afternoon, out on the patio, to also enjoy the great summer weather. It was fun. Building a 2x16W Class A amp with discreet OPAMPs as voltage amplifiers. A small guide to installing the add-on regulator module to Neutron Star 3 clocks. First the main clock module supports up to 4 add-on regulators. When you add 1 module you reduce the noise by 1.41 x. When using 4 modules you remove 50% of the noise, and thus improve the performance of the ultra low noise clock.
Each add-on regulator increases the idle current, and at 4 add-ons the pre regulators may become relatively hot, so if possible it's recommended to reduce the power supply voltage from 15V to 12V.

How to use the digital output of the Neutron Star 3 and 4. The chip on the right shows the generic chip of the CD player, network streamer etc. that you want to improve the sound in. You can either connect the main output which is an isolated COAX cable connected to the gold plated SMA connector. But if the distance between the clock and the chip is not too long (less than 15 cm) then the digital output may be a better option. It takes it's 3.3V (2 - 5V) power supply from the same chip where you connect the clock signal, so no voltage setting is necessary. The install is pretty simple. To activate the digital out, remember to short the "ACTIVE" bubble right on the left side of the PULSE transformer. The diital output is also isolated to 1500V like the main output, and it provides a viable clock output 30mS after power on the orannge connector. For Neutron Star 3 it's 12-15V DC 150 mA, and for Neutron Star 4, it's 9-15V DC 180 mA. The main supply is still necessary to power the clock.

New software update for the latest version of softstarter, with STM32 cpu. The problem fixed is that in +12V trigger mode, the softstarter sometimes crashes, and then you have to operate the on/off switch at few times, to make it work again. This is now fixed. If you want to update it, you can send your softstarter to my private address, and i will update it at ship it back to you free of charge. If you only use the on/off switch, then no reason to update it. E-mail to : [email protected] for details. (First letter L).

From time to time i receive technical questions about products from Dexa or NewClassD. So i am posting the response here on the Audio Construction page, in case anybody else can use the information. :-) You are also welcome to post any technical questions here. This time it's about UWB1 regulators. How to set it at different voltage. On this drawing you can see the position of the setting resistor, and the value should be: (Vout-2.48) * 400. For example for 5V you need 5 - 2.48 = 2.52 * 400 = 1008 Ohms, or about 1k. You can also see on the graphic how to replace a LM317 with the UWB regulator, NOTE though, that the UWB regulator has to be set to the correct voltage, and it will not use the LM317 setting resistors.

Happy New Year everyone, and THANK YOU for all your support in 2023. Good and bad things happened in 2023, i guess like any other year, but New Years is the time to wipe the board, and start fresh. New ideas, new plans, new hopes. I hope you all have some good ideas for fun audio projects for this new year, i know i have ^_^ . May 2024 be the best year in Audio ever!
