We had a great meeting with European Parliament Member, C Pernille Weiss, regarding patient leaflets in the medical industry and how it can be improved both in regards to sustainability but also enhancing the readability by applying better typographic solutions - we look forward to the collaboration!🌱

It is extremely positive how interested and reactive and openminded Pernille Weiss is to search for expertise to actually do something concrete and specific to help improve current narratives.

Sustainable Typesetting®, when applied to Henrik Pontoppidan's "Lykke-Per," involves reducing the book's length from the traditional compressed version of 832 pages to a sustainable typesetting version of 640 pages, while maintaining the same format. This reduction amounts to 192 fewer pages or a 23% decrease.
By collaborating with KLS PurePrint A/S🌱 and implementing various measures, we have achieved one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable books possible.

Rule 1. of book production: What is the function of the book? What is it going to be used for?
Traditional typeface vs Optimised typeface
There is subjectivity in font preferences, especially a traditional used font. If you read a particular typeface often, you tend to prefer that one. Some professionals and enthusiastic readers might have a stronger subjective opinion as to what they prefer to read - most people on the other hand do not. Not as long as the typeface resembles commonly used fonts.
Readability and legibility is objectively another matter.
A bigger typeface is easier to read, for everyone. Think of a visual test for drivers license or glasses👓🚙.
especially the younger and older you are, the bigger the point size you prefer.
Not only does choosing a custom made font for readability include everyone, but now it has a whole new purpose.
Sustainability and ressource saving through space efficiency, without compromising and even enhancing readability✅.

Improvements in the design phase trickles down through the entire supply-chain🌱

20% page reduction in a book, does not only save 20% paper from being produced or trees cut down🌲. It saves 20% in total ressource usage which reduces energy cost greatly🔋💰

A 500 page book typeset with the Sustainable Typesetting guidelines, can be 400 pages after✅. That means 2/10 books is spared in production and print time.

Lowering the bulk (thickness) of paper from 100g -> 80g does not accomplish the same goal, it makes the book thinner but still with same amount of pages. That does not nearly have the same effect on the supply chain emissions or cost.

Page reduction is paramount for a more sustainable book production.
