Introduction to the FileMaker Data API

Accessing data through REST is the current best-practice for data sharing. That’s not always been easy with FileMaker. Until now! In version 16 FileMaker introduced the FileMaker REST API which allows far easier integration of FileMaker with other systems.

In this session we’ll start from the beginning, looking at what REST is, why we might be interested in using it, how to configure FileMaker Server and a custom app to use the REST API and then begin interacting with our data.

Finally we’ll take a look at some simple examples of the way the API can be integrated into existing environments.

Developing FileMaker with FileMaker

We will introduce the internal use of xml in a number of areas in FileMaker, such as:

- The FileMaker clipboard

- Default Fields

- Save as XML and Version comparisons

- Add-on Tables

- Starter Solutions

This will all be discussed in the context of logic- and data-driven automated code generation as a powerful tool for FileMaker developers. While leveraging xml to this end has been possible to some extent for over 10 years - and we will show various examples illustrating this - there are still a number of limitations to doing so. We will discuss how new features in the latest version of FileMaker, and the FileMaker roadmap, are showing that this is a direction FileMaker developers should explore and prepare for, if they haven't already done so.

Using Google Flutter to Deploy FileMaker-Connected Mobile Apps

For many years, it’s been easy to deploy FileMaker applications on iOS using FileMaker Go or the iOS SDK. For a long time, the only option for Android deployment was to use WebDirect or custom web publishing. Last year saw the arrival of LiveCodeFM, which is a great option and easy to use. There is an additional option, however: Flutter from Google. Like LiveCode, it relies on the FileMaker Data API for connecting to FileMaker Server. Unlike LiveCode, it’s more complicated to work with, but the benefit is that a single Flutter codebase can be deployed to Android, iOS, and the web. It allows you to blend your FileMaker data with a powerful mobile application development environment to create something completely different from a typical FileMaker mobile application.

In this session, we’ll create an example Flutter application that communicates to FileMaker Server using the FileMaker Data API, and then deploy it to Android, iOS, and the web. We’ll also contrast Flutter with other single codebase native mobile options such as React Native and Ionic.

FileMaker Devcon Scandinavia 2019 will be in Denmark on October 20-22nd.

The agenda, speakers and sessions will be posted by the end of August.

The venue: Konventum in Elsinore - station2station only 50 minutes from Copenhagen Airport. Only 10 minutes from the Ferry from Sweden.

Sunday October 20th: FBA Meeting by Claris from 17-18 and then Welcome Dinner for all.

Monday-Tuesday 21-22nd: FileMaker Devcon Scandinavia 2019 with the best speakers from FileMaker Inc, from Scandinavia, the US and other countries.

Wednesday 23rd: Optional Design MasterClass by Albert Harum-Alvarez of SmallCo.
