One of the greatest things about working on Al-Gaddah Challenge has been working closely together with the Yemeni game company Arkadia Studio 🇾🇪 Not only has it been a valuable experience for both studios to exchange skills and knowledge, but it has also been crucial in order to get the depiction of Yemeni culture right. In Al-Gaddah Challenge, the main character Yasmeen is female, which is something we at SGI would never have guessed would be controversial. The name Al-Gaddah means Grandmother since Yasmeen’s grandmother is a central character and task-giver in the game, resembling Yemeni culture where the grandmother also plays an important role in the family.
With a country that is more than 11 times as big as Denmark, it was a challenge to make a game that encapsulated all of the different cultures within Yemen. By working with locals, the game achieved successfully represent the visual styles of all parts of the country.
Something that we at SGI in particular love about Yemeni culture is how ice cream trucks are passing by every day, playing a quite detailed melody. If you listen carefully, you can hear the ice cream melody at the marketplace in the game.
Do also pay notice to the soundtrack in the game, by Mohammed Al-Dobaey. It has a great balance between traditional Yemeni music and modern beats.
We want to send a huge thanks to the Project Manager at Arkadia Studio, Marwan, who front-managed the ship from the Yemeni side. And to the programmers Yousef and Lujain, the artists Abrar and Noha, and the narrative team Hussein, Abeer, and Rana. This has been such an enjoyable collaboration, and we hope to work together with you again in the future.
