Thanks to rapid and many events shaping our world, the way we consume has changed profoundly. Curious to understand these changing dynamics, we surveyed 2,000 Brits to learn how they satisfy their daily news appetite. (Turns out it's not all crumpets and tea breaks 👀)

Our is useful to publishers and editors, media researchers and marketers, and anyone else who wants to know:

Generation Z makes up 25% of the world’s population. By 2031, according to International News Media Association (INMA), they will make up 31% of the workforce. Likewise, their importance in the online news landscape is growing exponentially.

📍 But despite Generation Z’s widespread with various topics and their inevitable potential to shape future digital , most news organizations are not keeping up with the pervasiveness of digital media to stay relevant and fail to reach this critical audience.

Are people avoiding out of disinterest or as a rational choice?

In its Digital News Report 2023 , Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism reports disappointing data - 36% of those surveyed continue to selectively avoid the news, up 7 percentage points from 2017, but 2 points less than last year.

However, they also found that most news avoiders (55%) are simply looking for more positive stories, 46% are looking for in the news, and 39% are looking for .

📍So, is the term "news avoidance" valid, or does it simply shift the blame onto users without allowing us to understand the real reasons behind it?

Here's a quote from Shirish Kulkarani from the conference in March 2023, where we think he lays out the crux of the problem: Instead of making sensational and downbeat news in an attempt to get readers' attention, journalists should choose a more explanatory and solutions-based approach to help readers make sense of the world around them.
