When a camera looks like a pair of glasses, what does consent look like?

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, already available across numerous European markets, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK, are becoming increasingly popular, combining a familiar everyday
object with cameras, microphones, and AI.

And that's where an interesting debate begins.

Taking a photo with a smartphone is usually obvious. With smart glasses, recording can be much less noticeable, even though Meta has built in a visible LED to indicate when the camera is active.
Recent controversies suggest that society isn't quite comfortable with the answer yet. Cases of people being filmed without their knowledge have reignited concerns about privacy, consent and the normalization of being recorded.

The technology itself isn't necessarily the problem.

The question is whether the people being photographed have a real chance to know and consent.

And as AI becomes increasingly capable of analysing faces, voices and surroundings, a recorded image can become much more than a photograph.



And Europe, with its EU AI Act's transparency rules, requiring certain AI interactions, biometric uses and AI-generated/manipulated content to be made transparent, alone cannot answer the question
of what meaningful consent looks like when recording becomes almost invisible.

For companies developing AI and biometric technologies, this raises a fundamental principle:

Innovation needs to make trust more visible - not privacy more invisible.

Smart glasses may offer enormous potential for accessibility, productivity and everyday interaction. But the more seamlessly technology integrates into our lives, the more important privacy by

A fraudster doesn't necessarily need to create a fake account to exploit a digital service. Consider “Pell running”, a scheme in which criminals use fake identities to enrol students, submit FAFSA applications and collect aid without attending classes.

The example is specific to education and financial aid. But the underlying problem is much broader.

It highlights a fundamental weakness in traditional identity verification:
We often verify someone when they enter the system and then largely assume the identity remains trustworthy.



So, the question becomes:

On January 02, 2027, the EUDI wallet will be launched in Germany.

This marks the beginning of a new phase of digitisation in Germany and Europe: Citizens will be able to identify themselves securely and digitally, easily store and share evidence on their smartphones, and use digital services without media discontinuity.

The EUDI wallet is a key project for digital sovereignty, modern administrative action and competitive digital business models.

Many people say:
"The EUDI Wallet will change digital identity."
We think that's only half the story.
A more interesting perspective is:

The EUDI Wallet doesn't create trust; it carries trust.
But this trust has to be established before a credential is ever placed into the wallet.

That raises fascinating questions:
How do we know the identity was verified correctly?
How do we prevent deepfake-assisted onboarding?
How do we balance strong identity assurance with privacy?
How can biometrics strengthen trust without becoming surveillance?

Those are exactly the kinds of questions that organizations like BioID are helping to answer.

The EUDI Wallet doesn't remove the need for identity proofing; it actually increases it.

Before someone can receive a trusted digital identity or digital credential, there must be confidence that:

- The person is who they claim to be.
- They're physically present during onboarding.

For years, we have asked one question:

Is this person real?

But as deepfakes, synthetic identities and autonomous systems become more convincing, I think we need to ask a harder question:

Can we still trust the interaction?

I explore this in my latest article, The Next Fraud Won't Look Like Fraud.

The challenge is no longer only detecting what is fake. It is building digital ecosystems where identity, authenticity and trust can hold up as the systems around us become increasingly autonomous.

Because the next fraud may not look suspicious at all.

It may look exactly like something we already trust.

Stronger Onboarding. More Account Takeovers. What Changed?

Organizations have invested heavily in secure digital onboarding.
Identity verification is stronger. Liveness detection is becoming the norm. Regulations are raising the bar for identity proofing.

Yet account takeover (ATO) attacks continue to grow.

Why?

Because fraudsters have changed their strategy.

Instead of creating fake identities, they're increasingly targeting real ones,
using phishing, credential theft, session hijacking, MFA fatigue, SIM swapping, and AI-powered social engineering to access legitimate accounts.

Industry reports continue to show account takeover as a growing fraud vector alongside identity fraud.

This highlights an important shift:
Identity verification is no longer just an onboarding challenge.
It's a lifecycle challenge.

We can no longer just identify the person as who they claim to be, but also whether the legitimate account owner is still the person behind this session.

That's where continuous trust becomes essential.

For high-risk actions, many organizations are adding biometric re-verification as a form of step-up authentication - confirming that the legitimate account owner is still behind the session before approving sensitive transactions.

Biometric authentication combined with certified liveness detection (PAD) can provide an additional layer of assurance by verifying the presence of a real, live user before sensitive actions are completed.

As cybercriminals increasingly target trusted accounts instead of creating fake ones, protecting digital identities requires more than a secure front door.

It requires continuous identity assurance.

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗔𝗜 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲.

Young people are often considered digital natives.

But new research tells a different story.

A recent survey found that 61% of young people struggle to recognize AI-generated content.

Even more interesting?

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗭.

International research shows that people of all ages frequently mistake AI-generated images, audio and text for authentic content, and differences between age groups are surprisingly small.

Another study found that people distinguish AI-generated from human-created content only about half the time, little better than chance but essentially the accuracy of a coin flip.

This raises an important question:

𝗜𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲?

Media literacy remains essential.

But as AI-generated content becomes increasingly convincing, education alone won't be enough.

We also need technologies that help verify authenticity, from content provenance initiatives like C2PA to 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗳𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The future of digital trust won't depend on people becoming perfect at spotting fakes.

It will depend on combining human judgment, transparency, and trustworthy verification technologies.

Transparency Is Becoming a Legal Requirement—Not Just a Best Practice

Can you tell when you're interacting with AI?

From August 2026, the EU AI Act's transparency obligations under Article 50 will require providers of certain AI systems to clearly inform users when they are interacting with AI rather than a human.

Why does this matter?

Because transparency is the foundation of digital trust.

As AI becomes increasingly capable of generating realistic faces, voices, videos, and conversations, knowing whether content is authentic is becoming just as important as knowing who created it.

But transparency alone won't stop malicious actors.

As Robert Frischholz, CTO at BioID, puts it:

"Forcing vendors to add detectable watermarks to AI-generated media will not solve the problem. People who want to spoof facial authentication systems with GenAI content will either remove those watermarks (which is easily accomplished) or use locally hosted deepfake generators that do not create watermarks in the first place. A deepfake detector capable of identifying AI-generated photos or videos—regardless of embedded watermarks—is therefore essential."

This highlights an important distinction:

Regulation can require transparency from legitimate AI providers—but fraudsters are unlikely to follow the rules.

That's why organizations need technologies that go beyond disclosure and can independently verify:

✔️ the authenticity of digital content,
✔️ the presence of a real human,
✔️ and the integrity of digital interactions.

This is where biometric authentication, Presentation Attack Detection (PAD), and deepfake detection play an increasingly important role in building trust in an AI-driven world.

The AI Act sends a clear message:
Transparency is becoming a legal obligation. Verifying authenticity remains a technological challenge.
