A basic device can support different feature sets.

Performance can be priced according to application metrics.
Capabilities can be activated later.

Virtual controllers can be instantiated dynamically rather than purchased as individual physical devices.

And manufacturers can build recurring or after-sales revenue around software that continues creating value long after the original hardware purchase.

But industrial reality also imposes limits.

Cloud licensing may simplify provisioning and updates, yet many factories remain skeptical of anything that makes production dependent on a permanent Internet connection, and air-gapped environments remain common.

That is one of the key messages Oliver Winzenried brings to our latest conversation with Klaus Bauer of TRUMPF.

Industrial cybersecurity has to evolve continuously. Operating systems change. Security requirements change. Cryptographic algorithms change. And the technologies protecting software and digital assets need a migration path that keeps pace with all of them.

Post-quantum cryptography makes that challenge particularly clear. Larger keys, different computational requirements, and potentially many protected functions inside a single machine mean that manufacturers cannot simply replace one cryptographic algorithm with another and assume the job is done.

What is needed instead is cryptographic agility: an architecture designed to accommodate new mechanisms, secure updates, and evolving trust models throughout the lifecycle of the protected software.

In the interview, Oliver explains how Wibu-Systems is preparing the CodeMeter ecosystem for this transition and why planning for future cryptographic requirements has to start well before quantum computing becomes an immediate operational threat.
