UNCTAD’s much awaited review of Maritime Transport for 2021 is now available and, as ever, is packed with analysis and data on global maritime transport, ports, infrastructure and regulation. The report’s long-term outlook identifies a range of structural factors likely to significantly impact the future shape of shipping. Included are changing patterns of globalisation, the drive for more resilient supply chains, changes in consumer spending, the growth of ecommerce, the need for environmental sustainability, the global energy transition, and the continuing uptake of digitalisation.
The report points out that companies who had invested in digital infrastructure and connectivity, and that had promoted data exchange, had navigated more smoothly through the disruption brought about by Covid.
Within liner shipping, those carriers who currently invest in IT platforms and software – such as Softship.LIMA – are likely to have out-performed their less-digitalised peers and will now find themselves in a better position to take on the challenges of 2022 and beyond.
