Since implementing Wärtsilä’s Fleet Optimisation Solution (FOS) in 2019, Carisbrooke Shipping Ltd has been using the platform to gather insights that have supported the UK-based dry bulk and general cargo ship operator in its objectives around reducing carbon emissions and ensuring fleet performance, which is core to the company’s current strategy.

We had a great opportunity to visit Carisbrooke's Kitty C vessel in Sheerness and interview Capt. Simon Merritt, Senior Fleet Manager, and William Bell, Second Officer, to take a deep dive into the benefits FOS brings to the onboard processes.

"Among other things, we are able to use the live data from FOS to optimise our voyages, to arrive just-in-time and to cut carbon emissions", says Capt. Simon Merritt.

"At Carisbrooke Shipping, we take our environmental responsibility extremely seriously. After the implementation of FOS, we've seen carbon reduction of 6% across the fleet", says William Bell.

Nobody in the maritime industry would deny that digital transformation is essential to our future. But digital uptake has been slow. Part of the problem? We all have different interpretations of what it looks like.

Like stories of mythical sea monsters, these mindsets reveal more about our state of mind than reality. Wärtsilä’s 2022 free report 'Debunking the mythical beasts of maritime digital transformation' explores these industry attitudes to uncover the truth behind what’s been stopping progress – and how we can move forward.

Safer navigation, reduced crew workload and improved transparency are at the top of the wishlist for tanker operators.

ZEABORN Tankers achieved all three with the fleetwide introduction of Wärtsilä’s Fleet Optimisation Solution (FOS) on their managed wet fleet.

We've interviewed ZEABORN's Master, Technical Superintendent and Second Officer to find out what they think the role and impact of FOS is.

With the MARPOL regulations implementing the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) regime entering into force on January 1st, it is clearer than ever that keeping track of a vessel’s performance, especially fuel consumption, and monitoring its trading patterns, are crucial to stay compliant.

However, to make headway, monitoring and reporting are just the tip of the compliance iceberg. Armed with the right insights, you can turn the lead weight of compliance into a golden opportunity for optimising your vessels, fleets and business outcomes.

For users aiming for simple compliance and for those with an eye for maximising value, this is how you turn regulatory requirements into business opportunities: https://go.wartsila.com/the-alchemy-of-effective-compliance-fb

Less and less territory is being left uncharted when it comes to exploring the benefits of data exchange and holistic solutions that drive digital maturity and shape the connected environment in the maritime industry. Engaging all stakeholders together is vital, as is keeping up with the regulatory framework that governs data sharing practices in the maritime industry.

In an exclusive interview to Wärtsilä Voyage, Natasha Brown, Head, Public Information Services, International Maritime Organization - IMO, talks about the importance of data exchange for emissions reduction, next steps in the workflow on digital issues and IMO's strategic direction to integrate new and advancing technologies in the regulatory framework.

As shipping brings new solutions to bear on its challenges, some long-held maritime concepts need to be safeguarded – and others jettisoned.

The absolute authority of the captain is one example of a maritime concept that is being actively challenged. Greater connectivity between ship and shore means that captains can receive information - and instruction – from land-based management. This brings certain benefits in terms of safety and fleet coordination, but also has some unwelcome consequences.

Check out our latest article where we take a closer look at integrating the old and new to optimise shipping: https://go.wartsila.com/integrating-the-old-and-new-to-optimise-shipping-fb

Can you think of other examples of long-held ideas that are being challenged as new technologies and new business demands drive a search for better solutions? Share your thoughts in the comments bellow!
