“So pretty! But do you have them in white?”
Raku 🤔?
This is one of the questions we’ve been asked the most over the years. The Preto series of our speakers gets its name from Portuguese (where we mold the vessels) and means “black”. Mapu Preto, in a blend of languages, translates to “Black Earth”.
Changing the color of these pieces is something we’ve tried a couple of times before, but so far we only had failed attempts. The technical difficulty is no joke: if the clay and the Raku glaze don’t match, the thermal shock can cause the piece to shatter.
With the support of an incredible master potter from a village near Bremen, Martin Mindermann, we gave it another shot using the Raku firing technique. We weren’t just aiming for white, but also testing different glazes to achieve finishes we’ve never tried before. 🫣
Raku firing can be guided, but never fully controlled. Each resulting piece will be completely unique, unrepeatable, and with a personality of its own.
