eAssistant Engineering Tip: Unknown Pressure Angle? Two Span Measurements Are All You Need.

When reverse-engineering existing cylindrical gear pairs or involute splines, you may know the gearbox and have several measurement values available, but the pressure angle is unknown.

With the new Re-Engineering function in eAssistant, the pressure angle can now be reliably determined directly from two span measurements. All you need is one measurement using the ideal number of teeth to span (suggested by the eAssistant calculation module) and a second measurement with one tooth more or one tooth less.

This provides an important geometry parameter quickly and reproducibly – creating a solid basis for the further reconstruction and redesign of involute gears.

The function is available directly via the calculator button next to the pressure-angle input field in the Single Gear, Cylindrical Gear Pair, Planetary Stage, and Involute Spline modules.

Practical tip: The pressure angle can be entered not only in decimal degrees, but also directly in degrees, minutes, and seconds. Simply click on the unit label.

From Design to the Finish Line! 🏁

When digital models become real race cars: At the final race of the "RAO – Computer-Aided Design and Optimization" course, master's students from the and put their developments to the test on the racetrack. Adding a special splash of color this year was a bright pink race car – a real eye-catcher in the summer heat.

The final race provided the perfect opportunity to bring theory and practice together. The teams competed in exciting races, showcased creative engineering solutions, and impressively demonstrated their technical expertise.

Alongside the technology and competition, there was also time for personal exchange and networking. A shared barbecue in beautiful summer weather provided the perfect ending to the event.

Many thanks to Louisa Türke, Gunther Weser, Carsten Stechert, and the team from for their commitment, support, and excellent organization. It was a successful conclusion to the course – one that would not have been possible without their dedication.

New ANSI/AGMA Load Capacity Calculation Added to Additional eAssistant Modules

Following the successful implementation of the new *ANSI/AGMA 2101-E25* edition in the eAssistant calculation modules “Spur Gear Pair” and “Planetary Stage”, the latest load capacity standard has now also been integrated into additional modules of the web-based calculation software eAssistant (www.eAssistant.eu).

ANSI/AGMA 2101-E25 is now also available in the modules “3- and 4-Gear Train” and “Rack and Pinion”, running in parallel with the previous ANSI/AGMA 2101-D04 edition as well as the established calculation methods according to DIN 3990, ISO 6336 for metallic spur gears, and VDI 2736 for plastic gears.

The updated modules are now available online for all eAssistant users, providing up-to-date and standards-compliant gear strength calculations for everyday engineering applications.

Pushing the Limits of Involute Spline Design in eAssistant

The eAssistant involute spline module (www.eAssistant.eu) has been further enhanced. An improved interference check helps detect potential collisions at an early design stage, thereby reducing assembly risks.

In addition, the input range for the pressure angle has been extended down to 1°, which is particularly relevant for applications such as injection-mold tool design where manufacturing deviations must be considered.

Helical involute spline shaft and hub connections, while rather uncommon and not standardized, are used in specific applications. In eAssistant, they can be easily calculated using custom input. By default, helix angles up to 45° are available; if required, this range can be extended via an optional activation up to 89°.

With these enhancements, eAssistant further increases its capabilities for the precise and application-oriented design of involute spline shaft and hub connections.

More Reliable 3D Gear Models - New STEP Export in eAssistant

Digital gear design does not end with calculation. It must seamlessly transition into CAD. The web-based software eAssistant from GWJ Technology now offers a significantly enhanced 3D STEP export for gears - designed to improve robustness, geometry validation, and flexibility.

Intelligent Geometry Validation Before STEP Export.

Before generating the 3D tooth geometry as a solid STEP model, eAssistant now automatically checks:

- Whether an undercut/root fillet intersection is present
- Whether a pointed tooth occurs
- Whether there is any flank interference at the tooth tip / outside diameter

And this is not limited to involute cylindrical gears. The validation is available for:

- External and internal spur gears
- Racks
- Involute splines (shafts and hubs)
- Straight and helical/skew bevel gears
- Spiral bevel gears

Even the complex 3D tooth geometry of bevel gears is checked prior to model creation. If geometry conflicts are detected, the software provides clear guidance on how to resolve them saving valuable iteration time.

In addition to solid models with a defined number of teeth, eAssistant also enables the export of a surface model of the tooth space profile. This surface model is generated without interference checks and can be used in any CAD system. This allows simple creation of gears - especially bevel gears - with arbitrary blank geometries by applying a boolean subtraction in your CAD system. So, complete gears can be generated efficiently and flexibly.

For users working with CAD systems where no dedicated eAssistant CAD plugIn is available, the new improved STEP export provides a powerful and practical alternative.
