However, even more, important than that is the ability to cope with the style and scope of studying abroad. There is a great gap between the knowledge base of students who started their education in advanced countries and those who joined at c

ertain stages from developing countries. This gap presents challenges for international students to cope effectively in most organized international study programs. Our goal is to close this gap by informing prospective international students and expatriates about how best to get prepared to study and work abroad. If you’re moving to Germany — or already living here — this story is for you.

On my very first work trip from Rostock to Gothenburg, I made a simple mistake: I used my mobile data at sea.

One month later? An €800 phone bill.

I panicked. I couldn’t sleep. But instead of ignoring it, I called my provider, asked questions, and requested Kulanz (goodwill reduction). They reduced the bill by more than 50% — and even allowed me to pay in installments (Ratenzahlung).
Lesson?

Don’t panic. Don’t ignore letters. And don’t be afraid to ask.

In Germany, many problems can be solved — if you read, speak up, and take action.

Most of your problems in Germany would disappear if you simply had the patience to read what is in front of you.

So many immigrants get into serious trouble not because Germany is “hard” — but because we ignore letters.

Every letter from an Inkasso company comes with added service fees. €3 here. €5 there. Depending on the “weight” of the case, it keeps increasing. And if you don’t read carefully, you might end up paying way more than you should.

Most people think expensive = better quality.
But that’s mostly marketing, not facts.

In this documentary, branded products were put head-to-head with store brands from dm, Rossmann, Aldi, Lidl, Netto, and EDEKA — and not just by opinions.
👉🏽 Real lab tests. Real experiments. Real results.

Dishwasher tablets were tested under the same conditions, same dirty plates, same machines.
Guess what?
🧼 The dm store brand came out BEST — and it was also the cheapest.

Same thing with chocolate 🍫
People swore they could “taste the difference”… until the brands were hidden.
🥇 The winner? Aldi’s chocolate, one of the cheapest.
The most expensive brand? Not even close.

So the question is:
Are we paying for quality… or just the label?

In many supermarkets in Germany, branded products and store brands often come from the SAME manufacturer. Same factory. Same ingredients. Same quality.

Yet one is expensive… the other is cheap. Why?
Because you’re paying for the logo, not the content.

Some “no-name” products are literally made by the same companies behind big brands. Sometimes the only difference is the label slapped on the pack.

👉 Smart shoppers don’t read the logo.
👉 They read the label.

So next time you’re shopping, ask yourself:
Are you buying quality… or branding?

Many people think DAAD scholarships are only for students applying from their home country. But that’s not always true.

Some German public universities offer internal DAAD support for students who are already studying in Germany, usually through the International Office and often advertised every semester.

The application goes beyond grades. Timing, a strong motivation letter, honesty about your financial situation, reference letters, and even extracurricular activities all matter.

If you’re studying in Germany or planning to, this is the kind of information many students find out too late.

I dreamed of becoming a medical doctor.
Tried JAMB four times — 264, 248, 290, 276.
Still didn’t make it.

Eventually, I studied Geography at OAU (Great Ife) — not the plan, but the path.
Years later, that same path took me to a master’s degree, a €500 monthly stipend, and a thesis on urban heat islands in Akure & Osogbo.

I expected 100%.
Got 95%.
Was angry. Challenged my professor.
He said: “There were limitations.”

I walked away disappointed…
Not knowing something much bigger was coming after that moment.

Lesson?
Sometimes life doesn’t reject you — it redirects you.
