Little Labs

Little Labs Little Labs was founded in 1988 by me, Jonathan Little. Little Labs products are designed in the tower room of a house high in the Hollywood Hills.

I came from the San Francisco Bay Area in 1979 with a background in electronics, to be a Studio Tech in LA. The first Little Labs product I designed was the Microphone Preamplifier, which has recently been re-released as the LMNOpre with more features, but internally using the same discreet gain stages. I have worked in the technical department of several top LA Studios including Conway Studios, w

here I was the Chief Tech, A&M studios (ten years), Village Recorder, Cherokee,and the now defunct Devonshire and Salty Dog studios. It is at these fine studios where I have refined my products with the help and feed back of truly the best recording engineers in the world. Other good things are coming along, lots of new products in the works! The latest is the Voice of God or VOG analog bass resonance tool. This entirely new design allows you to conrol your bass spectrum in a truly unique manner. One use of the VOG will convince you it's not an EQ, It's not one of those sub-bass synth things, but it is as it is called, a bass resonance tool. You're going to dig it and the circuitry used is as high quality as you would find in a serious hi end hi fi. Hope to see many of you next week at Superbooth 26 in Berlin, Germany. I'll be exhibiting a rack of all the Little Labs goodies and demoing some. It's a cool show, a bit like a rave and trade show in one, surrounded by a forest, what you'd expect in crazy Berlin. Very different from NAMM or Musik Messe😆! Booth 0123, be there!

The newly native UAD Little Labs VOG has been getting a lot of fresh attention. This is the original UAD-produced VOG demo reel from 17 years ago, back when I had hair 😁. It still sums it up well. I’m happy so many great artists have discovered the VOG’s fast, easy usefulness for creating heavy, deep-bass bliss. The hardware is still available too for you pure-analog fans. Enjoy!

If you ever wonder what the hell I'm doing looking over the Hollywood Bowl at my lab at Little Labs, the VOG is a hardware creation I designed in that lab 17 years ago. Today I’m doing the same thing, designing a new product, the THAT70SEQ (but more on that product later). Back to the VOG…

Shortly after the hardware release, Universal Audio's genius Dr. Dave Berners (MIT, Cal Tech, Stanford PhD) modeled the VOG using my schematics into a very popular plug-in, which was just made native today, meaning it runs without the UA hardware on all computer platforms! Thank you, Universal Audio!

The way UAD plugins are created is not to just recreate what the hardware does, but to model the exact electronic components used in the hardware. Why this makes a difference is that, just as you can recreate the EQ curves of a Pultec, it's not just the EQ curves that make a Pultec a Pultec. My hardware VOG was a big breakthrough for me when I discovered a way to achieve extreme roll-off and super-high-Q resonance simultaneously, using only a single capacitor and amplifier in the audio signal path. Open-sounding, musical, clear, extreme low-frequency sculpting was the result! Modeling the plugins the way Dr. Dave Berners and the UAD team does is what sets Universal Audio apart from many other plug-in makers, and you do hear the difference. UAD plug-ins are superb!
