🌱 Phenotyping beyond the surface – root assessments with PhenoAIxpert Pro Root

🟢 Plant phenotyping does not end with shoot data, frequently root data are required, too. You need to know how the rooting process takes place and what structure the root system builds up in substrate. Digging and washing delivers basic information, however non-destructive time series are more desirable.

🟢 Phenotypic responses caused by gene functions and environmental factors shape dimensions and structures of root systems. Thus, root phenotyping is demanded in plant research, plant breeding, environmental and climate change research, and for the development of plant cultivation products such as fertilizers or biostimulants.

📷 The LemnaTec PhenoAIxpert Pro Root provides precise imaging of roots and shoots for plants cultivated in flat rhizotron boxes. It has a specialized rhizotron holder positioning the transparent plate towards the camera, combined with patented illumination to ensure reflection-minimized image recording. Matching rhizotron boxes, RhizoStore rhizotron storage racks, and RhizoMove trolleys are available together with the PhenoAIxpert Pro Root.
Moreover, multispectral shoot imaging provides an option for in-detail assessments of the shoot system. In addition, a switchable version, including a foldable plate with a turning table for pot multiview imaging is available – you can use either rhizotrons or pots in one cabinet.

Moreover, studies on environment, plant stress, and climate change depend on plant phenotyping. In R&D for plant management, fertilizers, biostimulants, or plant protection, phenotypic data are essential, too.

📷 The LemnaTec PhenoAIxpert Flex provides precise imaging of potted plants up to 200 cm height, with high resolution industrial cameras viewing from top and side. Imaging options include RGB (top- and side-view), hyperspectral imaging, 3D laser scanning, and thermal IR imaging (top view). The scanning sensors are mounted on a scanning unit moving along the horizontal and vertical axis of the samples. A motorized turning unit enables multiview side imaging of the plants

🟢 In addition to phenotyping plants in classical pots, PhenoAIxpert Flex can perform root phenotyping with plants grown in transparent tall pots. Such square cylinders made of transparent material provide access to plant roots, and a specific root-directed camera, combined with LED lights can be installed.

🌱Chlorophyll fluorescence phenotyping for tall plants with PhenoAIxpert CF

☀️ Photosynthesis is the main driver of plant growth and development and thus of plant phenotypes. Chlorophyll fluorescence provides a non-invasive measurement of status and activity of photosystem II so that fluorescence imaging is a key part of plant phenotyping. It serves to assess plant stress and diseases, as well as responses to environmental factors or treatments.

📷 The LemnaTec PhenoAIxpert CF enables chlorophyll fluorescence for tall plants using a high resolution camera combined with high performance LEDs for reliable saturating of the photosystem II. It can operate using the PAM or the OJIP protocols. In addition, the camera can record color images and selected spectral channels.
The chlorophyll fluorescence imaging system in the PhenoAIxpert CF is mounted on a height-adjustable frame that allows moving the imaging head in optimal distance to the plants, form small seedlings to 200 cm tall plants.

Chlorophyll Fluorescence for Stress Detection in Plant Phenotyping
⚡ Plant stress develops way before humans see damage at leaf level, or RGB cameras can capture color changes in the plant surface.

🪴 Thus in plant phenotyping, multi-modal imaging can do much more beyond the structural phenotyping.

🔴 Using chlorophyll fluorescence, it is possible to see stressed plants long before the color change of damaged leaves occurs. A decrease in Fv/Fm indicates stress, even if the leaf as such still looks green. The chlorophyll is still there - making the leaf looking green - but the photosystem II is already damaged by the stress.

🪴 Plant phenotyping for R&D on plant treatment agents

🟢 With each changing factor in the environment, plants adapt their phenotypes. Plant treatments make use of this, with fertilizer promoting growth, or plant protection agents acting against pests and diseases.

🧪 When developing such plant treatments, phenotypic assessments are key to estimating whether the candidate substances are effective and to check whether adverse effects are absent or minimized.

🪴 Phenotypic screening and response assessments are common in R&D for the development of fertilizers and agrochemicals. Applications range from high throughput screens to identify suitable candidate substances over dose-response tests to performance measurements of new products.

📷 While RGB imaging is important for any of such applications, specific imaging principles such as chlorophyll fluorescence imaging or hyperspectral scanning might be useful to gain detailed insights.

🔴 NEW for Your Root Analysis System: RhizoStore and RhizoMove!

🆕 We are introducing RhizoStore and RhizoMove as accessories for the LemnaTec PhenoAIxpert Pro Root.

🟢 LemnaTec RhizoStore: Store the LemnaTec Rhizotron boxes at 45° angle to ensure proper growth of the roots along the transparent plate. The RhizoStore holds the rhizotrons during cultivation in greenhouses or growth rooms, and ensures that the transparent plate of the rhizotrons is shielded from light so that roots are in a dark environment.

🟢 LemnaTec RhizoMove is a dedicated trolley to move rhizotron boxes between the growth area and the PhenoAIxpert Pro Root imaging cabinet - or for any other transportation purposes. On the trolley, the rhizotron boxes are stored in the same holders as in the RhizoMove, so at 45° angle with light-shielded roots.
