What does an extremely low-output MC cartridge sound like through the Fonolab DECVS?

LP Magazin put the DECVS through an extensive listening test using the Sculpture A MC 5.3, a 0.1 mV cartridge — exactly the kind of demanding cartridge the DECVS was designed for.

Their conclusion:

“Fonolab’s DECVS is an excellent transformer solution for cartridges with very low output voltage. Easy to handle and sonically wonderfully smooth, direct and coherent.”

During the listening sessions, the reviewer described the combination of Sculpture A and DECVS as:

“wonderfully smooth, elegant and direct.”

For us, this is particularly meaningful because DECVS was created not simply to provide more gain, but to preserve the character and energy of extremely low-level MC signals while keeping the signal path quiet and coherent.

The fonolab DECVS was recently reviewed by LP Magazin in Germany, with particular attention to its approach to transformer design.

One aspect of the review that we especially appreciated was the description of the DECVS design philosophy:

“A transformer is a ‘complete work of art’ made up of all the parameters involved. This includes balanced signal routing, the transformer configuration itself, shielding, grounding and mechanical construction.”

This is exactly how we see the transformer.

The transformer itself is only one part of the final result. Its implementation within the complete architecture is equally important — from balanced signal routing and shielding to grounding and mechanical integration.

DECVS was designed around this principle from the beginning: every element has to work together as part of the signal path.

SVPER QVATTVOR — 5th Anniversary Edition.

Why In-Phase and Anti-Phase MONO?

Mono MC cartridges are not all built the same.

Some use coils with the same polarity — In-Phase. Others use coils with opposite polarity — Anti-Phase.

When the two channels are summed to mono, the signal must be configured correctly for the cartridge. Otherwise, phase errors and partial cancellation can occur.

SVPER QVATTVOR provides both In-Phase and Anti-Phase MONO configurations, allowing the transformer to match the cartridge’s internal coil arrangement.

A small switch — but an important detail when working with serious mono cartridges.
