How do you pass link equity from an old URL to the new one?

301 redirects.

How do you make sure the equity lands where it should?

Monitor the status code and redirect location.

If you only monitor the location, you won’t know if the equity is being passed correctly. Check only the code, and for all you know your users are being sent to the wrong place.

An HTML document head is a bit more structured: title, meta description, open graph tags, possibly some GTM and a few other essentials.

Problems with these tags don't usually impact what users see on the page. The damage is felt downstream in social shares and search results:

- Broken OG image tag → boring text-only social preview

- Unresolved template variables in the title → ugly "Untitled" in the browser tab
