Christiana Karagiorgi Architects Christos Pavlou
Competition Entry 2026

An article in Cyprus Mail in which +draftworks architects and Christiana Karagiorgi Architects are thinking about the Cyprus Home….

…. “The intimate enclosures of the yard, the courtyard, the vine-covered pergolas, and a central tree for morning coffee, the shaded threshold between inside and out gradually lost their central role as modern lifestyles changed dramatically,”…..

Not so long ago, the people of Cyprus lived surrounded by colour. Balconies overflowing with plants, shutters painted in bright shades, tiled courtyards, and homes decorated with personal touches all contributed to the island’s unique look. Today, however, a walk through most recently constructed ...

The project was commissioned by Kuutio Homes with a clear vision: to create five exceptional homes within a unified development—a place of retreat where residents could reconnect with the silence, landscape, and rhythms of the Cypriot countryside.

Our response was to develop an architectural narrative rooted in modesty and a profound connection to topos—the spirit of place. The challenge was to produce an entirely contemporary architecture while drawing inspiration from the principles of Critical Regionalism and the work of Aris Konstantinidis, particularly his iconic holiday house in Anavyssos, Greece. The raw serenity of Konstantinidis’ architecture—where exposed concrete and natural stone merge seamlessly with the rugged landscape—became the conceptual point of departure for the project.

The permitted building coefficient was fully utilised, resulting in five compact residences of approximately 160 m² each. The development comprises two typologies: three single-storey bungalows and two two-storey houses.

A contemporary interpretation of the flat roof defines the architectural language, articulated through fair-faced concrete beams—occasionally inverted—to create a strong horizontal expression. Natural stone cladding, detailed to evoke the depth and solidity of traditional load-bearing stone walls, reinforces the dialogue between architecture and landscape.

The three bungalows are organised within a precise 18 × 18 metre square perimeter, where built volumes and open courtyards are carefully composed within a single enclosing frame. This strategy allows the houses to be perceived as more generous than their actual footprint, as the architectural envelope defines both interior and exterior living spaces rather than merely enclosing rooms.

The interplay of enclosed, semi-enclosed, and open spaces enriches everyday life, creating a sequence of changing spatial experiences that respond to light, climate, and nature. The result is an architecture of restraint—quiet yet expressive, rooted in the traditions and landscape of Cyprus.

In Paphos, banana plantations cultivate more than fruit—they cultivate climate, memory, and place. It is here, where banana leaves meet the Mediterranean breeze, that architecture quietly begins.
