Scope creep is a term used in project management to describe the uncontrolled expansion of a project’s scope beyond its original goals and objectives. This can lead to delays, budget overruns, and a decrease in quality.

To avoid scope creep, it is important to clearly define the project’s requirements before starting the project, ensure that all stakeholders agree on these requirements, communicate the scope clearly, and establish a change control process to manage any changes that may arise.

Some common causes of scope creep include unclear project goals, poor communication between stakeholders, lack of stakeholder involvement, and inadequate change control processes

To mitigate these causes, it is important to establish clear project goals and objectives, communicate effectively with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, involve stakeholders in the decision-making process, and establish a change control process that includes a formal review and approval process for any changes to the project scope.

By following these best practices for managing scope creep, we can help ensure that your projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.

At Exelia we use scrum. WHY?

Scrum is a widely used agile project management and product development methodology. It provides a framework for the Exelia teams to work collaboratively on complex projects.

The Scrum methodology is founded on a set of values, roles, events, and artifacts that help us manage our work effectively and adapt to changing requirements.

Below are the key elements of the Scrum methodology:

1. Roles:
The Scrum Master: The Scrum Master is responsible for facilitating the Scrum process and ensuring the team follows Scrum principles.

The Product Owner: The Product Owner is responsible for defining and prioritizing the product backlog, ensuring that the team works on the most valuable items first.

Development Team: The cross-functional group of individuals responsible for delivering the product increment. The Development Team is self-organizing and collaborates to complete the work within a Sprint.

2. Artifacts:

Product Backlog: A prioritized list of all the features, user stories, and tasks that need to be developed for the product. The Product Owner manages the backlog.

Sprint Backlog: A subset of items from the Product Backlog selected for a specific Sprint. The Development Team commits to completing these items during the Sprint.

Increment: The potentially shippable product functionality created by the Development Team during a Sprint.

3. Events:

Sprint: A time-boxed period (usually 2-4 weeks) during which the Development Team works to deliver a potentially shippable product increment.

Sprint Planning: An event that occurs at the beginning of each Sprint where the team selects items from the Product Backlog to work on during the Sprint and creates a Sprint Goal.

Daily Scrum: A short daily meeting where team members synchronize their work, discuss progress, and identify any obstacles.

Sprint Review: A meeting at the end of each Sprint where the Development Team demonstrates the completed increment to stakeholders and receives feedback.

Sprint Retrospective: A meeting at the end of each Sprint where the team reflects on their processes and identifies improvements for the next Sprint.

4. Values: Scrum is based on five core values: Commitment, Courage, Focus, Openness, and Respect. These values guide the behavior of individuals and interactions within the Scrum framework.

The Scrum methodology emphasizes adaptability, iterative development, and a focus on delivering value to the customer. It encourages collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement. Scrum is often used in dynamic and complex project environments where requirements may change frequently, making it a valuable approach for managing uncertainty and delivering high-quality products.

Email marketing is sending commercial messages via emails to a targeted group with the goal of building relationships, promoting products, and encouraging loyalty. Key aspects include building a consent-based email list, segmentation, engaging content, clear CTAs, mobile optimization, automation, A/B testing, compliance, and email analytics. It's an effective tool for businesses to communicate, increase brand awareness, drive sales, and nurture customer relationships while maintaining relevance and avoiding spam.

Exelia Technologies developed a custom e-mail marketing application written in .NET technologies, with a touch of Natural Language Processing. The application was written from scratch, and it incorporates a message bus, recipients, suppression lists, campaigns, versions, steps, an A/B testing module, as well as an overall dashboard.

The Natural Language Processing element is what makes the application unique and ahead of competitive applications. The application is able to analyze recipients' profiles and make classifications, which will then dictate what type of content each of the recipients will receive, in order to optimize lead generation.

At Exelia Technologies we are developing a few projects in different areas of the Maritime Industry.
One of these is an end-to-end bunkering analytics solution which provides a consolidated view of delivery-information and international prices of marine fuel. This solution allows for a broad range of in-depth analytics for our client - a leading bunkering agent.

Already in Phase 3 the application takes maritime digitization to the next level.

From complementing bunkering operations, to a single dashboard that can provide analytics on the journey of the vessels, as well as Machine Learning to predict prices at ports with groundbreaking precision, this application is ideal for control rooms across the globe.

So what is Bunkering?

Bunkering in the maritime industry refers to the process of supplying fuel to ships, typically in the form of marine fuel or bunker fuel. Ships require significant amounts of fuel to operate their engines and support various onboard systems during their journeys. Bunkering ensures that vessels have an adequate and reliable supply of fuel to meet their operational needs.

The types of fuel used for bunkering can vary, but the most common one is bunker fuel, also known as marine fuel or heavy fuel oil (HFO). Bunker fuel is a residual fuel that remains after the more valuable and lighter components of crude oil have been extracted. It is thick and less refined than other petroleum products, making it suitable for large marine engines.

Bunkering can occur at various points during a ship's journey, depending on the ship's itinerary and the availability of bunkering facilities. Some ships may bunker before departure, while others may do so at intermediate ports or at their destination. Large ports and major shipping lanes often have designated bunkering stations or barges that deliver fuel to ships.

The process of bunkering involves transferring the fuel from the storage facilities onshore or on a bunkering barge to the ship's fuel tanks. It requires specialized equipment and trained personnel to ensure the safe and efficient transfer of fuel. Bunker barges and trucks are commonly used for smaller vessels, while larger ships may utilize bunker vessels with dedicated pumping systems.

Bunkering is a critical aspect of maritime logistics and has a significant impact on a ship's operating costs and environmental footprint. As the shipping industry evolves to comply with environmental regulations, there is a growing interest in using alternative fuels and more sustainable bunkering practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Some of the alternatives being explored include liquefied natural gas (LNG), biofuels, and other low-sulfur and low-emission options.
