Radiacode - Radiation Detector and Spectrometer

Radiacode - Radiation Detector and Spectrometer Radiacode is a portable radiation detector and spectrometer for all nature and science enthusiasts

02/06/2026

Not long ago, radiation detection was something most people associated with laboratories, research facilities, and restricted areas.

Today, enthusiasts take spectrometers into forests, museums, cities, abandoned sites, and road trips around the world in search of unexpected discoveries.

As the hobby grows, so does the need to protect the equipment that makes those discoveries possible.

That’s why we created our silicone cases: designed for the people turning radiation detection into an adventure! 🫶

What exactly is cesium? 🤔

Cesium is a soft, highly reactive metal that belongs to the alkali metal family. In its pure metallic form, it reacts violently with water and even melts at around 28°C (82°F), meaning it can become liquid on a warm day!

BUT, cesium doesn’t only exist as a metal. It can also form compounds such as cesium chloride and many other salts, each with their own unique properties and uses.

Some glow because of UV fluorescence.
Some glow because of radioactive paint.
Some barely glow at all… yet still produce strong readings.

So which one is actually the most radioactive? It’s not always what you might expect… 👀

99.999% pure… and the spectrum STILL tells another story...?

This sample contains Technetium-99, one of the longest-lived fission products created in nuclear reactors! And even after extreme purification, tiny traces of Cesium-137 from spent nuclear fuel processing are still visible in the spectrum, using the Radiacode 103G. Pretty fascinating, right?

These vintage radium clocks still emit measurable radiation decades later! ☢️

While the gamma radiation may look concerning on a detector, the bigger concern with damaged radium clocks (or any radium-based artifacts) is the radioactive paint itself, especially once it begins turning into dust. That’s why old radium-painted items should always be handled carefully and left sealed whenever possible.

Friendly reminder to stay safe people! 💚

This monazite powder may look ordinary, but it naturally contains thorium and other rare earth elements!! ☢️

In this sample, the thorium-232 decay chain remains in radioactive equilibrium, which is why the Radiacode detects elevated radiation levels directly from the untreated material.

The reel also explores thorium nitrate crystallization and how radioactive decay changes over time as daughter isotopes disappear from the chain.

Nature is a lot more radioactive than most people realize. 😸

Just got your first Radiacode? ☢️ Congratulations! 🎊

Here are some of the best ways to start finding and identifying radiation around you, from using Search Mode and spectrometry to scanning everyday objects like granite, antiques, minerals, and even some smoke detectors!

Radiation is a lot more common than most people think, and once you start looking, you’ll probably never see the world the same way again.

We drove into the mountains searching for radioactive rocks, in the yellow SPORTS CAR. Yes, this is a SPORTS CAR.

After finding such rocks across Europe before, we thought we might get lucky again at the Troodos Geopark in Cyprus.

But of course, not every museum is radioactive… but every hunt still turns into an adventure. 🤷‍♂️ Touch grass! 🍃

With Radiacode and gamma spectrometry, you can estimate Cesium-137 contamination using the Food Contamination Mode within the official Radiacode application! 🦐🔬

It’s NOT a replacement for lab testing, but it offers a real look at what’s measurable, bringing radiation analysis closer to everyday use.
