After Effects is ridiculously hard…
…if you don't know how to do things properly.

Just look at this dynamic pie chart. There are zero keyframes here. I move one slider and the whole pie animates.
I can even choose how many slices I want to show.
Just remember, fewer slices doesn’t mean fewer calories. You gotta watch that body of yours!

Change a few numbers here, and the slices and labels shift automatically. You can rescale the whole pie, make the slices chubby, or even change colors.

BTW I published a full YouTube step-by-step tutorial showing exactly how to build this.
💬 Comment PIE and I’ll DM you the link.

Here’s how to use Adobe After Effects to render 820 NBA Game Matchup videos in 10 minutes.

You’ll need an After Effects template and a spreadsheet with 82 data sets, one row for every game an NBA team plays during the regular season. Prepare and optimize your rendering compositions in the project file: vomitory screens, main boards, LED ribbons, social media promos, and so on.

Use the Plainly Videos plugin to upload the project file to Plainly. Plainly is a video automation tool we will use to connect our spreadsheet and an After Effects template to render 820 video versions.

In Plainly, create templates from your rendering compositions, which is pretty easy when you use the auto parameterization feature.

Upload the spreadsheet as a CSV file to Plainly and select all 10 templates. Plainly will automatically link columns from the spreadsheet with dynamic layers from the After Effects project file.

Set up the output format if needed, preview the data, and hit render.

Since Plainly renders everything in the cloud, it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to render all 820 videos.

Once the whole batch render is done, you will get 820 game matchup videos ready to lift the whole arena up.

We’re continuing with procedural animations in Adobe After Effects and just a pinch of nostalgic vibes.

I recently started experimenting with the length() expression in After Effects, and my initial idea was simple:

'Let’s recreate Chicken Invaders!?'

But…
…turns out it was way more complicated than I expected.

So I leaned more into an Asteroids direction:
A fixed main ship with dynamic attackers.

'I don’t remember Asteroids having a freaking lightning gun!?'

They didn’t. Relax.
It’s all for fun anyway.

'Asteroids is a 1979 multidirectional shooter developed by Atari for arcades. You control a spaceship drifting through an asteroid field, blasting rocks and flying saucers while trying not to die. It gets harder, faster, and more chaotic the longer you survive.'

This version, though?
Fully procedural animation in After Effects.

Create cool sh*t.

Experimentations with procedural animation in Adobe After Effects.

0 keyframes - just expressions and sliders.

Animation driven by math.
Sound and glitches driven by randomness.

Once again, huge thanks to for having me - this time in a form of a workshop.

We covered the basics of motion design and After Effects - principles, transitions, keyframing, and a bunch of other cool things.

Big thanks to everyone who showed up - hopefully I sparked at least a tiny fraction of the passion I have for motion design (and After Effects ofc)

See you next year 🤟

Tapered wave line in Adobe After Effects - fully procedural, made and controlled using just 1 expression.

Why not just use Wave Warp or Zig Zag!??

Well:
- They don’t actually affect the Path property - it's still a straight line
- They definitely can’t create a taper
- They’re just not as cool as this expression

Anyway, leave a comment and I'll send you the expression 👇
