Precision in Action: Advancing Drone Application in the Field

As part of the Europe-funded project, we have conducted another drone crop protection treatment on our pilot field fully aligned with the principles of precision agriculture.
This activity was carried out in collaboration with our new drone service provider, AGRO DARIO , and on the field of our partner PG in Žabalj, Vojvodina, Serbia.
What makes this step particularly important is the change in the application approach. Instead of a uniform treatment, the process is guided by satellite EO data for variable rate application, generated via the Budget System - ABS Veggie platform.
This allows for targeted intervention applying inputs only where needed, while optimizing overall resource use, including water.
The key question now:
How will this precision driven strategy impact crop performance and resilience?
In the coming weeks, we will closely monitor the onion field by combining satellite insights with field observations.
This will allow us to assess efficiency, crop response and the real impact of data driven decision making.
Step by step, within the program, we are showing how EO data, digital platform and drone technology come together to transform agriculture into a truly precise, efficient and sustainable system.

ABS Veggie Major Milestone: First Drone Field Test Completed

This week we reached an important milestone in the ABS Veggie project (Farmtopia Open Call – Horizon Europe):
the first drone field thanks to AGRO DARIO test of our platform in real farming conditions.

At a pilot site in Vojvodina, we tested how Earth Observation (EO) data generated by the ABS Veggie platform can be translated into drone-ready files, enabling precise interventions directly in the field.

The testing focused on several key aspects:

• validation of the accuracy of files derived from NDVI layers for drone navigation
• assessment of weather conditions for safe spraying, especially the impact of wind
• investigation of variable drone spraying as a way to potentially reduce the consumption of various inputs to maintain crops in optimal condition.

In addition to the technical testing, we also invited local farmers to a field demonstration, using this opportunity to present both the ABS Veggie application and drone-based precision agriculture in practice. Their feedback and questions are invaluable as we continue to improve the platform.

These activities are part of the Phase 2 validation, where ABS Veggie is being tested over a full growing season of an old, climate-resilient onion variety, to ensure the platform provides actionable, field-based insights for farmers.

Step by step, we are transforming satellite data into digital insights and precise field operations.

The development of the platform within the Farmtopia Open Call project is progressing steadily, and the past period has been dedicated to an important milestone, the preparation of the D2 Report.

One of the most valuable aspects of this phase has been the direct collaboration with farmers, whose insights help us continuously improve the usability and practical value of the platform.
Their feedback allows us to refine the tools that connect production planning, field monitoring and decision support into one integrated system.

The next important step will be our Farmtopia , which we will organize in cooperation with our partner, farmer Svetislav Pačarić in Žabalj, Vojvodina Serbia.
The event will bring together local farmers, agricultural organizations and companies in the supply chain to demonstrate how the platform supports more efficient and data-driven vegetable production.

Through live demonstrations and field discussions, participants will have the opportunity to see how , the use of for variable spraying, and can help farmers make more informed decisions before and during the growing season.

For us, this is not only a dissemination activity, but also an opportunity to co-create the future of digital agriculture with the people who use it every day.

We are glad to see that the old onion varieties are gaining momentum!

We are especially proud of the excellent cooperation with PG Svetislav Pačarić, whose openness to innovation and precision agriculture practices makes this ABS Veggie pilot project truly meaningful in real field conditions.

It is this kind of partnership that allows digital tools - satellite tracking, Farmtopia Digital Field Book, and soon drone-based interventions - to move from theory to measurable, practical decisions on the ground.

We look forward to our next field visit to continue testing, learning, and further improving our precision agriculture services together.

🛰️ Phase 2 Milestone Achieved: EO Data Turned into Actionable Insights

Within the Agro Budget System - ABS Veggie pilot (Farmtopia – Horizon Europe), we have reached another key Phase 2 milestone:
Earth Observation (EO) data is now successfully processed and translated into actionable, plot-level insights for farmers.

Using satellite data, now delivers:
• parcel-level vegetation and growth analysis
• management zone identification on narrow, real-world fields
• early signals supporting irrigation, fertilization, and crop management decisions

This confirms that EO-based analytics can work reliably even on small and fragmented vegetable plots .

These insights will directly support the next steps of Phase 2, where EO analytics will be combined with drone-based precision operations and supplier services.

Another step forward in turning data into decisions and technology into real farm value.

The ABS Veggie- Budget System team is pleased to take part in the upcoming Farmtopia Webinar:
“Driving Innovation and Building Synergies Across SIPs”, taking place online on 11 February.

This session is a great opportunity to:
• present our progress as a Open Call beneficiary
• share lessons from co-developing ABS Veggie with farmers and suppliers
• exchange insights with other SIPs and sister projects
• explore synergies around Farmtopia services and planning

We’re especially looking forward to learning from other beneficiaries and discussing how different ADS solutions are being validated across real farming contexts.

Our pilot farmer Svetislav Pačarić will also be part of this journey, helping us bring practical, field-based experience into the discussion.
