Happy 25th Birthday, Linux! :)
On August 25, 1991, Finnish programmer Linus Torvalds sent out his famous message informing Minix users that he was doing a new operating system:
“Hello everybody out there using minix -
I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (…)”
So, 25 years later, it turns out Linux is bigger than GNU was. Linux kernel powers our Android or Ubuntu smartphones. Linux is the major open source alternative to Microsoft’s Windows OS and Apple OS X. It’s used on your smartwatches, smart TVs, Wi-Fi router… The whole Internet is powered by Linux!
P.S. Dear Linus, hope your “hobby” will be there for us for many years!
