♻️ Recyclability vs. Packaging Performance: How Should We Choose?
“Can we make this package recyclable?” is becoming a common question in flexible packaging.
But there is a more important one:
“Can it be recyclable while still delivering the performance the product needs?”
Packaging is not simply a material. It is a protection system. 🛡️
Depending on the application, it may need:
🔹 Oxygen & moisture barrier
🔹 Light & aroma protection
🔹 Puncture & tear resistance
🔹 Seal integrity
🔹 Drop & compression strength
🔹 Shelf life
The balance is different for every product.
🍵 Tea is a good example.
PET / AL / PE has long been used because aluminium foil provides excellent oxygen, moisture and light protection.
Today, customers are exploring MDOPE / EVOH / PE and other mono-material structures to improve recyclability. ♻️
But these may not deliver the same barrier performance as aluminium foil.
Instead of asking, “Can we replace aluminium?”, we should ask:
“What barrier level does this product need for its intended shelf life?”
☕ Coffee presents a similar trade-off.
Oxygen, moisture and aroma are critical. A more recyclable structure is not necessarily the right solution if it compromises shelf life or product quality.
🐾 Pet food is different again.
For 10 kg, 15 kg or heavier bags, mechanical performance becomes critical:
💪 Puncture resistance
💪 Bottom strength
💪 Seal integrity
💪 Drop resistance
💪 Handle performance
A recyclable structure still needs to survive the real world.
🇪🇺 PPWR will make this discussion even more important.
As brands evaluate Mono-PE, Mono-PP, EVOH and MDO structures, recyclability, barrier, mechanical strength, shelf life and cost need to be considered together.
So how should we choose?
Start with the product, not the material.
Ask:
1️⃣ What shelf life is required?
2️⃣ What OTR and WVTR levels are necessary?
3️⃣ What mechanical strength is needed?
4️⃣ What are the filling and sealing conditions?
5️⃣ What regulatory requirements apply?
Only then should we compare PET / AL / PE, PET / ALOX / PE, PET / EVOH / PE, MDOPE / EVOH / PE and Mono-PE / Mono-PP.
There is no universal “best” material.
The right choice is the structure that fits the specific application.
⚖️ The goal is to balance:
Performance + Recyclability + Product Protection + Cost
As packaging suppliers, our responsibility is not simply to say, “This material is recyclable.”
We should explain what it can do, what may change, and what needs to be tested.
🌱 Sustainability should not mean choosing between environmental responsibility and packaging performance.
The real goal is to optimize both.
♻️ Recyclability should not replace packaging performance. It should be engineered together with it.
That, in my view, is where the next generation of flexible packaging needs to go.
