What’s 4G and 4G LTE?
1. What is 4G?
4G refers to the 4th generation of cellular network technology. It’s optimized based on 3G and performs much excellent. 4G combines WLAN with 3G, making the image transmit faster and look clearer. The speed can reach up to 100Mbps. At present, 4G is the general standard adopted by most people. 2G and 3G are gradually eliminated. Although the emergence of 5G hit the market of 4G, 4G still occupies the dominant position.

2. What is 4G LTE?
LTE means Long Term Evolution, a technical standard for wireless data communication, which is created for constantly optimizing cellular network technology to meet the higher requirements of clients.

LTE, upgraded from 3G, is a transition between 3G and 4G. Thus, LTE is also called 3.9G. Some businesses may call it 4G LTE. 4G LTE is almost the same as 4G but there is a little bit different. It’s about 10 times faster than 3G and a little slower than 4G.

It improves the air access technology of 3G and adopts OFDM and MIMO as its unique standard in wireless network evolution. At 20MHz, it can provide the maximum downstream speed of 100Mbit/t and upstream speed of 50Mbit/s, which promotes the performance of cell-edge users and enhances cell capacity and reduces the system latency.

What is PON?
PON stands for Passive Optical Network. A PON is a telecommunications network that transmits data over fiber-optic lines. It is “passive” since it uses passive optical splitter to route data sent from a central location to multiple destinations.

PONs are used by ISPs and NSPs as a cost-effective way to provide Internet access for customers. Since PON is a point-to-multipoint (P2MP) system, which provides a more efficient way to transmit data than a point-to-point network.

The main transmission line can split off into 32 separate lines, which requires far less infrastructure than building direct lines to each destination with fiber optical cabling.

The central location of a PON is also called OLT (optical line terminal), while the individual destination is called ONU (optical network unit).

What is ONT?
The meaning of ONT is an optical network terminal, which is a device providing the family with access network. ONT is a separation between the Ethernet network and customer premises.

It can transfer optical signals from OLT (optical line terminal) into electric signals and offer various services such as high-speed Internet, IPTV, VOIP, WiFi, etc. to users.

Besides, sometimes people consider ONT as ONU (optical network unit). But technically, there is still some difference between ONT and ONU. ONT is a terminal device that is located at the user’s end. ONU is a unit and there are probably other networks between ONU and Users.

1. What is ONU?
ONU refers to optical network unit. It is the optical terminal device in the fiber access network, which provides users with multiple service interfaces. The network side of ONU is the optical interface. As for the user side, it’s the electrical interface. Therefore, ONU can transmit optical signals into electrical signals and vice versa. Besides, it’s capable of converting voice signals of D/A and A/D, reusing, processing signals and maintenance management.

Features of ONU:
1. Triple Play Service: Providing data, IPTV (interactive Network TV), VOIP (using IAD, Integrated Access Device) and other services.
2. Receive broadcast data sent by OLT.
3. Collect and cache the Ethernet data that needs to be sent by users and send the data to OLT according to the allocated sending window.
4. Offer abundant remote management capabilities supported by OAM.

2. Where is ONU in FTTx?
According to the different positions of ONU, the access methods of FTTx with LAN can be divided into FTTC, FTTB, FTTH, etc.- FTTC (Fiber To The Curb): ONU is placed in the central office of the community.
– FTTB (Fiber To The Building): ONU is set down in the junction box in the corridor.
– FTTN (fiber-to-the-node): ONU sits at the access point.
– FTTH (Fiber To The Home): ONU is located in the family users’ house.

The OLT device coordinates with different types of ONU to achieve all kinds of access networks such as FTTC, FTTH, FTTO, FTTM, etc. According to different services, clients’ demanding and regions, there are different strategies of the deployment.

Shown as the below image, it is an FTTH(Fiber to the Home) application of V-SOL EPON OLT device V1600D4-DP. The OLT connects to the management switch and ONU. There is a splitter between OLT and ONU. The whole PON can provide several families with multiple services like IPTV, VOIP, IP Camera, etc.
