In July 2026, OpenAI and Hugging Face disclosed what may be 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗹𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

The agent compromised parts of Hugging Face’s infrastructure – the popular open-source AI platform for sharing models, datasets, and machine learning tools.

In simple terms, an AI agent that should have stayed inside a 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗼𝘅 found a way out, reached real infrastructure, and carried out actions across internal systems.
