Five Core Gas Sensors
1. Oxygen (O₂) Sensor
As a mandatory inspection item for confined space access as specified in the SOLAS Convention, the oxygen sensor must accurately determine the safe concentration range of 19.5%~23.5% Vol. Below 19.5% triggers an asphyxiation warning, and above 23.5% triggers a fire and explosion risk warning. It is the "first line of defense" for crew entering confined spaces.
Core Application Scenarios: Concentration detection before entering confined spaces such as cargo holds, ballast water tanks, and fuel tanks; linkage monitoring of engine room ventilation systems; real-time monitoring of confined spaces during tank washing/maintenance.
2. Combustible Gas Sensor
When the combustible gas concentration reaches LEL 20%, a Level 1 alarm is triggered; when it reaches LEL 50%, a Level 2 emergency alarm is triggered. It is a core early warning component for preventing ship fires and explosions.
Core Application Scenarios: 24-hour continuous monitoring of cargo holds on oil tankers/chemical tankers; leak inspection of fuel pipelines in engine rooms/pump rooms; verification of safety values for tank washing/degassing operations.
3. Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Sensor
Hydrogen sulfide is a "hidden killer" in oil tanker operations; high concentrations can cause instantaneous poisoning and death. The sensor must accurately match occupational exposure limits to achieve millisecond-level early warning.
Core Application Scenarios: Crude oil/refined oil tank inspection, residual gas detection in ballast water tanks, and monitoring of personal protective equipment (PPE) used during tank cleaning operations.
4. Carbon Monoxide (CO) Sensor
Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and extremely toxic. It easily accumulates in enclosed spaces due to ship engine exhaust and boiler combustion gases. The sensor must capture real-time concentration changes and automatically activate the ventilation system to replace the exhaust gas in case of anomalies, preventing crew poisoning.
Core Application Scenarios: Engine room/boiler room exhaust gas monitoring, verification of ventilation effectiveness in enclosed cargo holds, and emergency trend assessment for cargo fires/leaks.
5. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Sensor
As a mandatory new testing item added to the IMO regulations, the CO₂ sensor must not only prevent asphyxiation caused by excessive concentrations, but also provide purity data for the inert gas system to suppress flammable gas explosions in cargo holds, and monitor carbon dioxide produced by the respiration of refrigerated cargo to prevent spoilage.
Core Application Scenarios: Supporting detection for confined space operations (essential for the five-in-one equipment in the new regulations), purity monitoring of the inert gas system (IGS) on oil tankers, and concentration monitoring in crew living quarters/refrigerated cargo holds.
Specialty Gas Sensors
In addition to the five core sensors, specialty gas sensors such as hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and phosphine (PH₃) provide "precise protection" for ship fumigation operations and the transportation of special chemicals, serving as an important supplement to the ship's safety protection system.
1. Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) Sensor: Primarily suitable for fumigation operations on container ships/bulk carriers and for transporting cyanide-containing cargo on chemical tankers. Detection accuracy ≤ ±0.5ppm. Must be resistant to cross-interference from hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide. After fumigation, the residual concentration must be accurately measured to ensure it is below the maximum permissible concentration stipulated by industry regulations before crew members can enter the work area.
2. Phosphine (PH₃) Sensor: Primarily used for monitoring fumigation operations of goods such as grain, to***co, and timber. It has both toxicity and flammability/explosiveness detection capabilities. Real-time monitoring of the concentration in the fumigation chamber is required to prevent poisoning of personnel and to prevent explosions caused by excessively high concentrations. Suitable for the entire storage protection process on grain transport vessels.
