Are More Driver Units in headphones Always Better?
Are more driver units in headphones inherently superior? In truth, adding multiple drivers to headphones is mostly unnecessary over-engineering.
This may raise a question: Why do loudspeakers adopt multi-driver configurations in the first place? For one thing, loudspeakers require large-sized cones to deliver deep, powerful bass. To achieve satisfying low-frequency extension and punch, woofers are typically 8 inches or larger. However, large drivers struggle to reproduce high frequencies clearly. Even if they can output treble barely, their poor directivity will distort the overall tonal balance. This explains why loudspeaker systems add dedicated midrange or tweeter units to compensate for insufficient high-frequency performance.
By contrast, headphone transducers, regardless of their physical size, can effortlessly reproduce frequencies up to 20,000 Hz, featuring native full-range performance. Directivity is never an issue either, as all sound output is straight into the ear canal.
Second, loudspeakers demand substantial electrical power to generate loud low-frequency output, which forces drivers to undergo large diaphragm excursions. A full-range single-driver speaker would suffer severe intermodulation distortion under such operating conditions, hence the need for a separate tweeter paired with a crossover.
With the exception of open-back earphones, earphone drivers operate with minimal diaphragm excursion. Properly engineered single drivers barely produce audible distortion, making extra driver units functionally redundant.
In my opinion, many brands deploy multi-driver setups primarily as a marketing gimmick. Such headphones are often priced at a premium, misleading consumers into believing that greater driver count equates to superior sound quality.
