ANC vs ENC: What’s the real difference in TWS earbuds?
Many people see “ANC + ENC” in earbud specifications, but they actually solve two very different problems.
ENC (Environmental Noise Cancelling) focuses on call quality.
It reduces background noise around the speaker, so the other person can hear your voice clearly, even in noisy environments.
ANC (Active Noise Cancelling) improves the listening experience.
It reduces surrounding noise on the user’s side, making music, calls and meetings more comfortable.
When it comes to ANC, you may also hear terms like feedforward ANC and hybrid ANC:
Feedforward ANC uses external microphones to reduce environmental noise.
It is cost-effective and widely used in high value TWS earbuds.
Hybrid ANC combines external and internal microphones, allowing the system to adjust noise cancelling more accurately based on what actually reaches the ear canal.
This results in more stable performance across different users.
In short:
ENC = clearer calls for the other party
ANC = quieter listening for the user
Hybrid vs feedforward only applies to ANC, not ENC
Understanding these differences helps brands and buyers choose the right product — not just based on price, but on real usage scenarios.
