📍 Yaham at InnoTrans 2026

InnoTrans turned 30 this year, and Yaham was honored to take part.
Over the four days of the exhibition, the show drew around 175,000 trade visitors, and it was more than we could have expected.

At our stand, we brought the spec sheets to life through in-person demonstrations and consultations on real-world situations. These are the conversations where practical expertise goes beyond the spec sheet. We are grateful for all the support we received last week.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, and to the InnoTrans team for such a welcoming and insightful exhibition.

Berlin, see you soon.

🚄Yaham making its way to InnoTrans 2026.

From 22–25 September, find us at the world's leading trade show for transport technology, taking place at Messe Berlin for its 30th anniversary.

Traffic displays, although similar to commercial LED, have their own challenges. Passenger information needs to be legible at a glance from long distances, and highway VMS needs to be visible in both low winter light and direct sun.

To discuss more on these challenges, find us at:
📍 Hall 4.1, Booth 677 — come talk displays, passenger information, and everything in between.

We're excited to meet everyone there. Drop a comment or send a message if you'll be there as well.

See you there!

💡Spec Explained - Grayscale and Bit Depth

When you hear bit depth, it sounds like it is referring to how deep a colour will look on your display. Yet it's actually closer to a dimming spec.

Every colour shade between white and black comes from rapidly switching the source on and off. The bit depth is how many steps that switching resolves — 16 bits gives 65,536 levels per channel.

A higher bit depth does not increase the range of the colours being shown, but rather how finely it can divide the range it already has. If there aren't enough steps to support a colour transition, banding shows up.

Dimming happens two ways: by reducing the drive current, or by shortening how long each LED stays on. The first keeps your steps. The second spends them — the lower the brightness, the fewer remain in play.

And outdoor screens don't run at full output for long. Ambient light sensors pull brightness down after dark, local rules often require it, and nobody wants 3,000 nits in their face at 4am.

Bright screens showing saturated graphics can live with coarse division. Dim screens showing soft gradients can't, and low brightness strains grayscale uniformity, so small type suffers alongside them.

A platform sign at 4am is the hard case: dimmed to its floor, mostly small type, read from a few metres away.

The question is not how many bits should I run. It's how good will my content look when brightness is lowered.

🚉 Product Highlight - Passenger Information Displays

Desert sun under an open canopy. Night on a covered walkway. Midday glare off a metal ceiling. Same product, three different problems.

A display for depature needs to align with it's environment. Whether it is the mounting height, the sightline, the angle, or the light exposure, all of those go into the consideration before anyone here would offer you a screen.

Yaham's PIDs are built around its environment, rather than one that is simply picked off a catalogue.
Featuring:
➤ Four display formats — amber, dual-colour and full-colour, 5mm to 8.6mm pitch

➤ Custom sizes and layouts — built to the station and its environment

➤ Modular design — serviced without pulling the board out of the building

➤ Waterproof, snowproof and dust-proof — for open platforms and exposed shelters

➤ Remote monitoring — voltage, temperature and humidity reporting for each screen

A departure board is not meant to be centre of attnetion. Passengers only need to look up, they get what they need, and they keep walking. That is the whole job. Not to be looked at, but to be read — reliably, by as many people as possible.

📏 Spec Explained - Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance

The right pitch depends on your viewing distance. In our industry the usual shorthand is one metre of distance for every 1mm of pitch. That is a starting point, not a spec.

There is a more precise way to get there, and it comes from how the human eye works. 20/20 vision is defined as the ability to distinguish two separate points one arcminute apart. That is the threshold where pixels blur together into a coherent image.

An arcminute is an angle, not a fixed size, so it scales with distance. The same one-arcminute gap measures 0.3mm at one metre and 3cm at 100 metres.

Work that backwards and a 1mm pixel gap crosses the threshold at 3.44 metres. Which gives you:
Viewing distance (m) = pixel pitch (mm) × 3.44

▸ P2.5 — pixels stop resolving at 8.6m
▸ P4 — 13.7m
▸ P10 — 34.4m
▸ P16 — 55m

That is your ceiling. Past it a finer pitch stops buying you anything — a P4 stops improving at 13.7 metres, a P6 catches up at 20.6, and beyond that the two look identical while one costs considerably less.

In practice you spec just inside that, at pitch × 2 to 3. A P3 works from 6 to 9 metres. Text and fine linework are the exception. When a letter stroke is only a pixel or two wide, the pixel structure becomes the letterform, so detailed content means moving closer or going finer.

At Yaham we start with where the most people will stand, then work back to the pitch.

✈️ Project Spotlight - Bao'an International Airport

The summer travel season ends today, before picking up again in October. Millions of people are heading home, and nearly all of them pass through an airport to do it. If they're landing in Shenzhen, it's Bao'an.

Yaham displays and lighting are both working at this one. One of them goes to work before you're off the aircraft. The others you pass on your way out. The airport handled 66.48 million passengers last year.

Here's what we have done for the airport:

➤ 2013. Outdoor billboard. A double-sided 16mm display, roughly 480m² across both faces. Straightforward DOOH work, sized for approach traffic rather than close viewing.

➤ 2020. "Future Tree Window," Ground Transportation Center. A 136m² double-sided main screen at 4mm, plus 103m² of custom 6mm panels wrapped into two radial steel trunks. The main screen raises and lowers on a lift system. Cabinets came in at 18.5 kg/m², which is what made a moving structure viable at this scale.

➤ 2020. Apron high mast lighting. Compact S series LED luminaires over the aircraft stands. Delivering crucial visibility through the night.

Three projects, seven years, one site.

⚙️ Behind the Scenes: Final Steps

After going through the different types of testing we do at the factory, here are the finishing touches a display goes through before going out to our clients.

From the previous posts, one would assume that the panels themselves are the largest failure points, but that is only one part of the story. Power supplies, driver ICs, capacitors and solder joints tend to give out long before the diodes do. A display rarely goes dark by itself. It develops a fault somewhere nobody was looking.

So before anything ships, we look at all of it.

Here's what stands behind every shipment.

➤ We look inside without opening it. X-ray and acoustic imaging reveal internal cracks, voids and delamination in ICs, PCBs and LED packages — down to the bond wires.

➤ We put it in the weather. Heat, humidity, thermal shock, UV, salt spray, rain. Every environment a display might live in, recreated in a chamber first.

➤ Then it runs for 72 hours. Powered, continuous. Anything that's going to fail early fails here, on our floor, not on a building.

➤ Electrical safety. Insulation and grounding verified, in addition to making sure that all the parts can handle

➤ Then the checklist. Not a generic one. Each client's project receives their own specification, and they get checked twice before it leaves.

Three days of running, on a product built to run for years.

Then it gets packed and sent to all of you.

🌊 Behind the Scenes: Coastal Testing

The coast is a different beast when it comes to its effect on outdoor lighting.
Heat degrades what's on the inside. Salt works in from the outside, and it never stops.

Anything close to the water sits in a corrosive environment every hour it's installed. Coatings, castings, fasteners, and connectors, all of them are under constant pressure.

This is why we have our own testing for these environments:

➤ Salt spray test chamber — holds a sample in salt mist and reveals where the protection gives out first. Pores in a coating, a bad seam, an exposed fastener. Displays and luminaires both go in.

➤ Salinometer and pH meter — two of the three instruments in that lab don't run the test at all. They control the salt concentration and the acidity while it runs.

➤ Oscillating pipe rain rig — sprays water across a ±60° arc, then ±180°, simulating rain from every angle a facade actually gets it. Ten minutes each.

➤ Nozzle flushing rig — moves from rain to jets. The final stage puts 100 litres a minute through a 12.5mm nozzle from 2.5 to 3 metres, straight at the front and the back of the cabinet.

The cabinet then gets opened and checked for water inside the enclosure and past the seals.

A hundred litres a minute is more than any storm delivers. That's the point.
