On 24 October, we're getting together for a full day of building, learning, experimenting, and connecting with other people who like making things happen.

This year's Hacktoberfest is about open-source AI and open-weight models, with the theme:

AI for Everyone.

And you don't need to be an AI expert to take part.

Come with a project.
Come with a team.
Come alone and find people to build with.

During the Hack Day, you'll have time to work on your idea, learn from other builders and mentors, and finish the day by showing what you made.

There will also be prizes, Hacktoberfest swag, and an official participation certificate for attendees, while supplies last.

For the past few years, we've talked a lot about training.

We have emphasized skills, tools, projects But there's another part of the journey at Iknite Space that matters just as much.

𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

That's something we're thinking about more seriously moving forward because developing good talent is only one part of the work.

The other is creating opportunities for these talents to contribute, work, collaborate and grow.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗯.

We see this a lot with trainees who just join the program.

You can know your programming language.
You can have certificates.
You can build something on your own.

But what happens when you have to work on a project with other people?

What happens when you don't understand the task?
When someone reviews your work and tells you to change it?
When the solution you came up with doesn't actually solve the problem?

That is where being work-ready starts to matter.

At Iknite Space, we don't want participants to only learn how to code or design. We want them to learn how to work.

• How to ask questions.
• How to approach a problem.
• How to work with a team.
• How to take feedback.
• How to make decisions.
• And how to keep going when things don't work the first time.

Because at the end of the day, companies do not hire because of how many things you were taught.

They are hiring you because of what you can actually do with what you know.

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗜𝗸𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝟬𝟰
He was working as a driver while learning to become a developer.

He joined Cohort 04 because he genuinely wanted to improve his skills and knowledge as a developer.

Over the course of the program, he worked on a projects; , a vehicle rental system he built together with two other trainees. A project which had been identified by him as a huge problem for persons willing to rent cars in Cameroon.

It is applaudable that despite joining the program with such little knowledge, Tonny was able to pickup, work in a team, mange his job as a driver and still grow as a developer.

He showed up for training, kept up with his work, worked with a team and still found the time to build.

At Iknite Space, that's what we're interested in.

Not just what someone knows, but what they can actually do with it.

𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁!

Learning how to write code is important, same as learning how to design an interface.
Neither of these things on their own, prepares you for working on a real product with other people. We have had people in the cohort who are exceptional designers/developers working alone but when it comes to working in a team, they break. As a designer/developer who wishes to excel in the job market, you must note the following;

• You need to know how to receive feedback.
• How to explain your decisions.
• How to work with someone else's code.
• How to work with a designer, an engineer, a product manager.
• How to take something from an idea to something people can actually use.

That's why Iknite Space goes beyond teaching technical skills.

Participants don't just spend their time learning. They work together, make decisions, solve problems and build things that have to work.

Because eventually, the classroom has to give way to the work.

One of the most valuable things that can happen in a developer's journey is getting connected to someone who has already been where you're trying to go.

Not someone who gives you a list of things to learn.

Someone who can look at what you're building and say:

“Don't do it that way. Here's why.”

Someone who has fought the bugs you're fighting.

Made the architecture mistakes you're about to make.

Had bad interviews.

Built things that nobody used.

Learned which skills actually mattered at work—and which ones looked impressive on a CV but didn't help much.

That's the real value of mentorship.

You don't just get information.

You get context.

And context can save you months.

At Iknite Space, mentorship is part of the journey because learning technology is only one part of becoming a professional developer.

THE QUESTION EVERY JUNIOR SHOULD ASK A SENIOR

“What am I doing now that will become a problem later?”

Not:

“What framework should I learn next?”

Not:

“What's the highest-paying language?”

Not:

“Which certification should I get?”

Ask someone who has been doing the work:

“Looking at the way I'm working today, what would you change before I get too used to it?”

Because some bad habits are cheap to fix when you're starting.

They become expensive when you've built your entire workflow around them.

That's one reason experienced people matter in a developer's journey.

They've already paid for some of the lessons you're about to learn.
