In the past days our newest radar installation has been busy detecting avalanches in the Little Cottonwood Canyon. The radar scans the mountain 24/7 and supports the UDOT Cottonwood Canyons Transportation in their challenging work of keeping the road to Alta open for the public in winter. The radar provides the avalanche experts with spatial information on avalanche activity and supports avalanche control missions that often take place during bad/no visibility as it reveals what's happening on the mountain in real-time.

At the request of SNCF Réseau on Monday, we installed an interferometric radar the following day in the commune of Le Freney in the Maurienne region to monitor the 12,000 m3 slope failure that had occurred on Sunday. The road and railway line between Italy and France are currently closed due to the event. The interferometric radar system detects displacements in the range of millimetres over the entire slope in all weather and supports planning of measures to ensure safety and the resumption of traffic. The radar system operates energy self-sufficient and transmits the data to our online data portal for easy data access from anywhere via smartphone or PC. We support the early warning service of the municipality of Albula/Alvra with vital data on the critical landslide in Brienz/Brinzauls where an evacuation is currently underway: Since 2020, an autonomously operated interferometric radar has been providing area-wide information on surface deformation and deformation rates in all visibility conditions (day/night, fog, rain, snowfall). Recently, we also installed an autonomously operated high-resolution deformation camera DEFOX on the ridge providing detailed images of the upper slope and optical deformation analyses. The ROCYX rockfall radar in the village has been detecting rockfalls in real-time since 2018 and provides a measure of rockfall activity. It automatically closes the road to Lantsch/Lenz (currently closed due to the present situation).

We reinstalled the interferometric radar for monitoring the hanging glacier on the Weisshorn a month ago after the deformation camera indicated increased movement rates. The radar runs completely autonomously at 3500 m a.s.l. and provides decision-makers with important data on movement rates during day/night and in fog and snowfall.

Ein Hängegletscher am Weisshorn droht abzustürzen. Ein hochpräzises Radargerät steht im Einsatz, um den möglichen Gletscherabbruch von 600 000 Kubikmeter Eis vorherzusagen.

Finally some snow in the Alps! Yesterday, the recently installed AVYX avalanche radar in Saas Fee, Switzerland, detected a spontaneous avalanche at 4.6 km.
