From Heritage to Innovation: How Saudi Arabia’s Filmmakers Are Shaping the Future
The Saudi Film Conference in Riyadh wasn’t just a gathering—it was a powerful testament to a nation on the brink of a cinematic revolution. Meeting with production companies, filmmakers, and film schools from across the region revealed an undeniable momentum, as Saudi Arabia rapidly positions itself as a new epicenter for storytelling, innovation, and cultural transformation.
I was back on the road again, this time to a country undergoing a massive transformation, fueled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030. This bold strategic framework aims to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil, diversify its economy, and enhance public service sectors like health, education, infrastructure, and tourism. But what struck me most was how this vision is breathing new life into the arts and entertainment industries, with the film sector poised to play a central role in the Kingdom’s future.
Here are a few of my key learnings:
* Cultural Renaissance: Saudi Arabia is focused on developing a thriving arts and entertainment scene, with the film industry playing a central role.
* Infrastructure Investment: Mega-projects such as the innovative city NEOM and the opening of the world’s longest subway in Riyadh are part of this bold vision, emphasizing sustainability and cutting-edge technology.
* Empowering Women: The government is actively encouraging female participation in the workforce, including putting women behind the wheel—a literal step toward empowerment.
The energy in the country is contagious. You can feel it everywhere—especially the bustling booths at the show, where people are eager to bring their ideas to life. People are motivated, bubbling over with creativity, and eager to build something extraordinary. There’s a deep sense of pride in their rich cultural heritage, and this positivity shines through in their interactions, all done with a drive for excellence.
As an outsider, I was welcomed with open arms. Whether in the conference halls or on the streets, the hospitality was overwhelming. People were kind, not because they wanted something, but out of genuine goodwill. And while I was often jokingly called “James Bond” by some, the warmth and friendliness I encountered were the real deal, with genuine interest in what we were doing.
However, amidst all the positive energy, one issue stood out that struck a chord with me. Many filmmakers expressed frustration with using third-party software like Monday.com, Notion, and Trello, which, as we all know, aren’t tailored to the specific needs of filmmakers. The existing tools were only adding frustration rather than streamlining their workflows. The recurring theme? They need people who truly understand their unique challenges.
The moment I introduced Producer Maker Machina to them, their faces lit up with excitement, eager to get started. Many Saudi filmmakers also mentioned feeling left behind by solutions that didn’t accommodate their language or cultural needs. While higher ranks of film crews often speak English, it becomes less common further down the chain, creating communication barriers that add to the frustration.
From Saudi Arabia’s openminded filmmakers, we’re reminded that creativity knows no boundaries. Their openness, positivity, and unstoppable drive are a source of inspiration for us all. Together, we have the power to rise, to create, and to shape a future where stories transcend borders and connect us on a deeper level.
PRODUCER is honored to stand with Saudi filmmakers as they forge this exciting path, empowering them with the tools to streamline their productions and bring their visions to life. In a country fostering an environment of collaboration, and boundless creativity, the future of storytelling has never looked brighter. Let’s keep building together. The next chapter is just beginning.
