We spend a big part of our days sitting behind computers, just like many other companies these days. And while modern work gives us a lot of flexibility, our bodies often pay the price for long hours spent in positions that don’t feel very natural. 💻🪑

That’s why we invited an ergonomics specialist to help us better understand how to compensate for sedentary work and how to minimize its long-term impact on our health and wellbeing.

I’m really glad we make space for things like this. It’s easy to overlook how much our daily work habits affect us long term, so I appreciate that we actively try to support healthier ways of working. 💚

🤝 Big thanks go to Mgr. Jana Šopíková, Ph.D., for being our ergonomic guide and helping us rethink the small daily habits that can make a big difference in the long run.

At MapTiler, we try to create activities that bring people together, encourage healthier habits, and make everyday routines a little more intentional. That’s one of the reasons we take part in Bike to Work (Do práce na kole - AutoMat) every year.

Beyond the sustainability aspect, it has also become a fun team activity for us. As a remote-first company, we’re always looking for ways to stay connected outside of online meetings and messages.

So alongside the official challenge, we created our own internal weekly mini-challenges ("cyklohecy") to make the whole thing more fun. From festive bike outfits to drawing MapTiler through running or cycling routes, it’s been amazing to see how creative everyone gets (using our GeoSplats is one way to do it). 🚴‍♀️💚

One of our core values at MapTiler is simple: help others. 🤝

In practice, it’s usually the small things. Sharing knowledge, jumping in when someone is stuck, reviewing each other’s work, or taking the time to explain things properly.

But this mindset also goes beyond the company itself. Whether it’s supporting open-source projects, collaborating with academia, or contributing to initiatives like “Light Up Czechia”, we try to build things that are genuinely useful for others. 🌍💙

In April, we ran a company-wide Walking Challenge with a simple idea: walk (or run), track your steps, and try to move a bit more than you normally would.

We had weekly winners along the way, and in the end, one overall winner 🏆Jáchym with an incredible total of 586,733 steps!

But the main idea wasn’t the step count itself. It was about getting people to move more and be more intentional about it. Sneaking in an extra walk during the day, taking a break from sitting, stretching a bit more, or simply choosing to move when they otherwise wouldn’t.

As a remote-first company, we don’t meet in the office every day, so things like this help us stay connected and keep a sense of team spirit alive, no matter where we are. 🌍💙
