A heartfelt thank you to CAA Switzerland (the Swiss chapter of Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology) for organising last Friday's annual conference at the University of Lausanne, a memorable day for the Swiss archaeological community and the first edition held in French-speaking Switzerland, with around 60 participants on-site and online.

We were proud to contribute with a hands-on morning workshop on archaeological data management with ArcheoBase, exploring how teams can move smoothly from field documentation to analysis and publication within a single environment.

The afternoon programme covered the full spectrum of "Sites Numériques": integrative data management, relational databases, GIS analysis, predictive modelling, and the digital transformation of archaeological practice. It was great to see ArcheoBase referenced across several of the talks throughout the day.

A real highlight of the day: Romain Guichon & Grégory Christinaz (Archeodunum) opened the afternoon with a stunning presentation on the Lausanne Prés-de-Vidy excavation. The scale and quality of the work they shared was genuinely impressive.
Thanks to Prof. Demierre and UNIL for hosting us, and to everyone who joined this event.

What an incredible week at CAA 2026 in Vienna! 🏛️

We just wrapped up our participation in the Computer Applications & Quantitative Methods in Archaeology conference, and we're still buzzing from the energy and conversations.

The ArcheoBase booth was a real highlight, we had the chance to meet and exchange with archaeologists, IT specialists, and researchers from across the world. The level of interest in digital tools for archaeological data management was remarkable, and the discussions around real-world challenges and needs will directly shape where we take ArcheoBase next.

Our half-day workshop, "Efficient Archaeological Data Management with ArcheoBase" was packed with engaged participants. Together we walked through the full archaeological data lifecycle, from on-site digital recording, through post-excavation analysis, all the way to publication and public access. Seeing participants immediately picture how these tools could fit into their own workflows was incredibly rewarding.

A huge thank you to Anja Wutte and the entire organizing team for hosting us in such a spectacular setting, the University of Vienna is truly breathtaking, as you can see in the picture.

To everyone who stopped by the booth, joined the workshop, or shared an idea over coffee, thank you. We left Vienna with new friends, new ideas, and a lot of inspiration.

🚀 A new milestone for Swiss archaeology has been reached!
Until now, CHRONIQUES online was mainly about making archived reports accessible.
But for the 2025 edition, something truly new happened:
👉 Archaeologists authored their archaeological chronicles directly in ArcheoBase–ArcheoPublication.
👉 Their texts followed a structured editorial workflow, reviewed and validated by Archäologie Schweiz (Swiss Archaeology)
👉 Once approved, they were automatically published on the AS Portal, fully searchable and mapped.

This marks the first time that the entire workflow was managed in one integrated environment, powered by ArcheoBase.

We’re delighted to support this digital transition together with Swiss Archaeology and all participating authors.

🏺 Digitising a once-in-a-generation excavation
The preventive excavation at Prés-de-Vidy (Vaud, CH) is the largest in Switzerland since the motorway projects of the 1990s. Over four years, archaeologists are documenting everything from Mesolithic traces to the Roman city of Lousonna, an exceptional scientific opportunity.

What makes the project remarkable isn’t just its scale, but the way it brings people and tools together.

On site, archaeologists record observations directly into ArcheoBase using tailored digital forms, while a second team immediately processes and cross-checks the data. This near real-time collaboration helps avoid delays and speeds up interpretation, a major shift from the weeks of back-and-forth it once required.
More importantly, as Romain Guichon, chief archaeologist on site, puts it: “These digital tools also make a difference on a human level.” They foster better circulation of knowledge and strengthen the connections between everyone involved, from field teams to researchers and institutions.

It’s a privilege to support such work and I’m proud that ArcheoBase can play a small supporting role here, thanks to the dedication of the Prés-de-Vidy team and our partners at Archeodunum, who challenged us to make the tool truly serve their workflow.

🔎 Want the full story?
I’m sharing the article from Entreprise Romande (PDF, in French). The first section presents ArcheoBase; the second, “Archéologie à la croisée des chemins”, dives into the excavation itself. A great read for anyone interested in Swiss archaeology.

Thanks to all the archaeologists and heritage professionals who keep inspiring us.🙏

🔎 Excited to share this new coverage about ArcheoBase, a platform my brother and I created to transform archaeological work—from excavations to public outreach. Since the article is subscriber-only (and in French), here’s a concise summary in English:

Two brothers from Valais in Switzerland, Emmanuel and Jean-Philippe Clivaz, created ArcheoBase—an integrated platform covering the entire archaeological data lifecycle, from field excavations to public dissemination. Using advanced mapping, AI-driven data management, and flexible methodologies, ArcheoBase streamlines how professionals collect, analyze, and share discoveries. Already adopted by major excavation sites (including the largest ever in Switzerland at Vidy), it’s designed to maintain each institution’s unique approach while still promoting collaboration and efficiency.

Beyond its professional tools—available at a low monthly license fee—the platform has already integrated 7,000 past archaeological chroniques in partnership with Swiss Archaeology (AS Portal), with more to come from as far back as 1908. Looking ahead, a free public interface called ArcheoView is planned for 2026, aiming to make heritage accessible to everyone through interactive maps, 3D models, and published findings.

Ultimately, ArcheoBase seeks not only to improve archaeological workflows but also to preserve and showcase our shared heritage for both researchers and the broader public.
