AquaGranda – Visual Identity and Poster Design

The communication campaign for AquaGranda visually translates the idea of stratified water levels — a metaphor for both the physical phenomenon of Venice’s tides and the layered memories of its community. The poster plays with typographic weight and transparency, using superimposed metallic grey tones to evoke the gradual submersion of the city. The printing was produced in Venice, directly “on the water,” reinforcing the conceptual and geographic connection to its subject.

The design employs Automatico Text Regular, our custom typeface distinguished by its unique uppercase Q, which adds a subtle identity mark to the project. The vertical reading of the title “AQU-A-GRA-ND-A” breaks into rhythmic segments, echoing the visual rhythm of rising tides.

On November 12, 2019, Venice was submerged under 187 cm of water — one of the most catastrophic floods in its history. From this event arose AquaGranda, a collective digital memory project that brings together science, art, and civic participation. Led by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the Venetian Research and Innovation District (DVRI), the initiative collects digital traces left by citizens — photos, videos, messages, and testimonies — to transform them into a living, evolving archive.

The 2023 edition, titled Incontri e dialoghi sulle maree (“Encounters and Dialogues on the Tides”), unfolded across Venice with talks, workshops, and a moving exhibition on an ACTV vaporetto, featuring Stratigrafie Operative — an artistic work by Giulia Bruno, Armin Linke, and Lorenzo Mason. The project, which explores the fragile balance between the city and its lagoon, received an Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica 2023 as one of Europe’s leading Citizen Science initiatives.

Automatico Studio exhibited among other great graphic designers originally from Canton Ticino at the graphic design festival in Lucerne, which took place from October 4–11, 2025. The focus of the project was graphic design in Ticino as a platform for reflection on small(er) cultural landscapes, as well as a way to bring together old acquaintances and create a social atmosphere.

The exhibition was curated by Luca (.ch) and Ruben () of .archive.

Our exhibited projects:
Acqua Granda Poster (), Automatico Font (.conrad, ), Unternehmen Mitte Poster (), SWB Publication (.ch, ) and Tracés Covers (***etraces).

Designers exhibiting:
Alberto, Alfio (), Alice (.moor), Ares (), Arthur and Roberto (@5115.studio), Demian (), Elanor (), Elisa (), Joshua and Federico (), Leonarda (), Lorenzo and Michele (), Luca (), Massimo, Patrick and Claudio (), Mavie (), Nadine (), Nathan (), Orlando (), Robin (), Robin and Federica (), Sabrina and Leonardo (.co), Simone (), Viktoria, Nicola and Bea ().

A systemic approach to orientation

More than a signage project, the system designed for Audemars Piguet is an infrastructural strategy. From macro to micro, every element has been conceived to support clarity of circulation, precision of movement, and safety of workflow.

We developed:
- A global diagram of flows (staff, visitors, logistics)
- Modular sign typologies and placement rules
- A custom set of functional pictograms
- Integration with architectural plans and spatial sequences

This methodology allows the wayfinding to adapt across various sites while staying consistent with the Maison’s identity. Architectural branding becomes an operational tool.

The craft behind the system

Each element of the Audemars Piguet wayfinding system was conceived as an industrial object of precision, echoing the brand’s horological DNA.

Letters are CNC-milled in solid aluminum, then hand-finished to feature a reinterpretation of the Côtes de Genève motif. The surface plays with light through striations and micro-textures that recall the finishes of high-end watch components.

Support panels are made of anodized, brushed aluminum with deep vertical fins—a structural and visual solution that enhances rigidity, depth, and light interaction.

This attention to craft, finish, and materiality transforms signage into sculptural and tactile architecture.

Ticino – shaped by language, geography, and a unique cultural reality. Between isolation and exchange, questions emerge: What opportunities arise, what connections, what differences for graphic designers?

Formato Cantonale brings together voices across generations and invites reflection on roots, dialogue, and progression.
