Now this is embarassing. I have a Boogie in the shop that is waiting for some parts and I lost tracK of it and the parts. To make matters worse I have lost track of who owns this unit. I have searched high and low through Quickbook and I can not find record of this Model of Mesa Boogie. If anyone out there has had a Boogie sitting with me for quite a while and not heard from me please call me. So we can ID your unit and figure out what happened to the paper trail.

My Hair is washed and I am shaved and I have my Eye Patch on. I am ready for my second day at Pirate Camp. Actually NO. This is my second day after Retinal Detachment surgery. 7 Days of lying on my face to help my Retina heal. Needless to say I will not be in my shop during that time. It seems God put second rate parts in my eye sockets. I have Glaucoma, Cataracts (Fixed) and Retinal Detachment (Fixed twice in 15 years) I am convinced my eyes came from a Chinese Factory. (Never great quality but they are very inexpensive and easy to get) What I do have that is great is 2 of the most amazing Eye Surgeons. Dr Gdih installed my new lens and has given me life without glasses in my declining years. He also polices my Glaucoma. Then I have Dr Leicht. The best Damn Retinal Detachment surgeon. Hi fixed my right eye 15 years ago and that surgery worked fine for all those years. This weekend we needed a rework on that eye and he did it again but he used today's most current technology. The actual outcome on this job is still uncertain. We will know in a few weeks. Even if the outcome is not excellent this time, he gave me 15 more years the first time around. Who can complain about that?

I recently fixed a Marshall 2203 for a back line company. The unit needed new output tubes. I installed the tubes and biased them and then audio tested. The amp buzzed like mad. And the weird thing was the buzz was the worst when the gain control was at Zero or at "11". If you turn the gain to 12 or 1 Oclock the buzz went way down. What the "F*&k"? I examined the circuit and found shielded wires between the input jack and the first tube stage and between the gain control and the second tube stage. This is not unusual. The shield is there to prevent hum from getting in to these high gain tube stages. The I looked closer and saw the shield wires were connected to the output pins of the preamp tube. What bone head did this? The shield wires should be connected just at one end to the ground of the input jack for the first wire and the ground of the gain pot for the second wire. The purpose is the shield should drain away any noise currents to ground. What this was doing was injecting a signal voltage on to the shield. Now I understood why the gain control did these strange things. The output of a preamp tube is out of phase with the input. So when the gain control was turned up there was a certain point where the signal on the output pin was just large enough to balance with the input signal and cause cancellation. I installed new shielded wires and grounded one end only to their respective ground points and WALLA! This 2203 is nice and quiet again.

Recently I had to do the dreaded Timing chain on my Mini Cooper. This is a huge job. It can be as much as 6K to get it done. I went to my friend Sean at axlsnakedog. Sean is the guy that has done everything on my bike for year. I figured if he can do a Harley he can do Mini Cooper. He got it done a few weeks ago for about half of what I expected and he did a bunch more that was needed that had nothing to do with the Timing Chain. End result after a few weeks of driving my Gas milage has gone way up. Average on a trip to Sioux Narrows- 37mpg. It has never done that before. Also it makes way more power than it did. WOOHOO. I love my Cooper and now I can drive it again. If you want to see Sean and Sarah at work go to axlsnakedog on youtube. They are a really entertaining team. Sean does not do just any job but he does to timing chains on Mini Coopers. Contact him if you are interested or contact me if you can not track him down.

Today I have to tell an unpleasant story about a Hafler DH500. 15 months ago someone dropped off a Hafler 500. The amp was behaving very oddly. It would pass signal without load but would crap out as soon as you hooked up a load. This is what BJT amps do when the have bad driver transistors. But a Hafler is a MOSFET amp. Analog MOSFET amps are rare so I do not have exhaustive experience with them. Also linear Mosfets are very hard to get, so when a Hafler like this has failed mosfets it is time to junk it. Also this Hafler was not made to repair easily. It was a mess to get into the guts of the unit. I told the customer all of this and suggested that he should expect to spend $440.00 on this project and there was a chance the mosfets might be bad and that would be the end of the road. After that I did not hear from this guy again. I contacted him many times asking him to pay the estimate fee and take his amp back. DEAD AIR. After 15 months of this I decided to clean house. I gave this amp to a friend who likes to do hobby repairs. He dumped 12 hrs into this unit and got it to work. 12 hrs is $660.00. But this amp is not worth $660.00. So my friend asked my son Ryan to sell it for him and said to price it at $400.00. So Ryan posted it and out of no where the previous owner comes out of the wood work. This guy has been harassing me now for days. I do not know what he wants. I told him he was welcome to buy the unit. The asking price was well below the loose repair estimate. He waited until the unit sold to someone else and now he is still harassing me. I am expecting to see some kind of negative review from this individual so I am getting a head of that and being upfront about the situation. If I had been the guy who took on this project I would have given this guy first dibs but that was not my decision to make. I gave the unit away. As it stands my books still show $75.00 outstanding on the estimate and I stored this unit for 15 months for a guy that refused to return my calls. In retrospect I think I am lucky I did not get in any deeper with this person.

I am in trouble. I have a professional Musician who brought me a 68 Princeton Reverb Amp Re-issue. I thought a fixed it but he says "It does NOT sound right" How do you fix "It does not sound right"? What I do know from experience is when a pro says my amp is not right I hunt until I fine the problem. There must be a problem. The way to fix "it does not sound right" is to get a comparison amp (Exact same model) that does sound right. Then we do A/B tests with the scope and dummy load and we will quickly see where the differences are. Problem is I am having trouble finding a comparison unit. Does any one have a 60 Re-issue Princeton Reverb Amp that I could borrow for one afternoon?? IF so please contact me ASAP 204-295-0509

I seem to have a fraud problem. I have been told by 2 people now that they are getting messages that look like this. I never use black back grounds. You could say I am not a black man. If you see this black man claiming to be me please report it to Facebook. It seems I can not do so because not surprisingly he/she never contacts me directly.

I went to see The Sound of Freedom last night. To call this movie entertainment cheapens the experience. This movie is trans-formative on a visceral level. It made me clearly aware that this problem is a consequence of men in western culture that believe their need for sexual indulgence supersedes all other needs. Men need to see this movie so that they learn a very important lesson. Just because you feel like being something with every fibre in your body does NOT mean you have permission to being so. I case any are wondering why I have been conspicuously hard to find in the last week, it is because I have been wearing Camo. Well actually that is not why.The reason is that I have been away in England. (I have also be wearing camo as well) I will be here in England till July 19th and hope to be back in the shop on the 20th. I am most available on Whatsapp. I should be able to get your regular texted but I can not respond to them. We can also communicate via Facebook Messenger normally. If you really much call me I have an England ph # 011-4475-8873-1304 . However I have learned that a lot of cell plans do NOT allow international calling. Regular Email also works [email protected]. I am hoping to be inundated with with work when I get back. The photo is of the inside of Westminister Abbey. I heard an Organ/Choir performance there this past week. A truly extraordinary experience. I also was in St Pauls Cathedral and and heard the organ played. That was not so great because the building was far to reverberant. I am planning to propose to St Pauls that they hire me to solve this problem for them. I am thinking if we cover the whole inside with spray foam that should dampen out the reverb nicely. If they go for it I will need a number of helpers.

This past week I had the opportunity to work on a $20,000.00 CD player. An Esoteric K-01. The first thing you have to do when working on a costly unit is ascertain the availability of parts and service docs. After searching the web extensively I determined that Tascam/Esoteric had given exclusive rights of service to a single third party in North America. These people were not going to give me the sweat of their knackers. Knowing now that there was no infrastructure support for me I had to work very carefully because there is no room for sloppy mistakes. As you can see from the photos this CD Player is unlike any typical CD player. It is literally built like a tank. Where a 1/8” steel rod would do, Esoteric used a 3/8” steel rod. The entire unit is built like this, making it so heavy I almost broke my back getting the unit on the bench. So I examined the unit closely trying to determine what the correct disassembly procedure would be. I started by removing the Platter motor. (It must have weighed 2 pounds by itself.) Then I removed the CD tray and under there I found a rubber drive belt that was badly stretched. This belt drove the tray. I found a snug fitting belt in my inventory and installed it. Tested the unit and walla the unit worked. Now I had to find a “GOOD” belt. A factory belt would have been excellent but there was no way to get that. So I sourced a selection of belt sizes from Bob at Vintage Electronics and ordered them. Then I got a call from someone who claimed to represent the only authorized service center for Esoteric. Weather this was true on not I have no idea. I did not catch their name so I will just call them “R**e the Consumer Electronics”. They told me they wanted to help me with the K-01. I said “thanx but there was no need” because I had found the bad belt and was well on my way to having the unit fixed. RCE told me that replacing the belt would not fix the unit. They said that the CD transport was so fragile in this unit that when the belt wears out the entire transport has to be replaced. In fact according to them the reason this unit is so heavy is because Tascam has to build the case this way to secure this fragile CD transport. As you can see from the photo, this is completely ridiculous. The weight of the transport itself is clearly a significant part of the total weight of the unit. There is nothing fragile about this transport. In fact I have never seen a more rigidly built transport in my life. Clearly this guy was telling huge lies. Why? Because according to him, his company we the only organization that had the replacement transport and they would be very happy to install it for me if I would only ship this unit to them for service. I could tell that this guy was absolutely salivating over the idea of getting this CD Player from me. If he had drooled any more he would have spit in my face right over the phone. I thought how odd? This guy know he is talking to a technician. He knows that I have opened the unit and seen the transport in side. Why would he try to tell me such obvious and stupid lies?? I think this is connected to the fact that this is an Audiofile product. I suspect he has told this same fiction many times before to other owners of K-01 CD player and as a result has convinced these innocent consumers to give him thousands of dollars just to change a $10.00 belt. The sad truth is that the Audiophile industry sits on a solid foundation of bu****it. Just read any audiofile magazine and you will see that the grander and more remarkable the lies the more the customers will rush to the store to buy the magic item. So here we have “R**e the Consumer Electronics”. They have figured this out and have immersed themselves so fully in this culture of lies that their judgment is completely impaired. But what about Tascam/Esoteric? If it is true that they have made the scoundrels at R**e the Consumer Electronics their sole representatives for Esoteric products then they should be shot and pi**ed on. (Not necessarily in that order) It is unconscionable that Tascam would allow their customers to be ravaged by greedy wolves. Audiophiles may be willing foolish believers of sensational technological fictions but that does not give those of us who know better the right to take advantage of them.

Most CD players are not worth fixing. This is a BDC-1 from Bryston. Replacement value is $5000.00. Bryston does not repair this unit any more. They have no schematics for the Transport section. This unit came to me from a client who has a strong technology back ground so he dicked with it first and then gave up. Normally I do not like this but, like I said, his tech back ground is strong. Having said that my job would have been easier if I had been able to see everything he had done and in what order it was done. As a result I am not 100% sure what the original fault was? I suspect it was the crumbling magnet in the focus drive motor that was causing the focus servo to bind? I fix that by replacing the optic assembly with something that did NOT have a binding focus motor. But after that the unit would still not read the TOC. After many hours of urinating into a breeze I finally decided I needed to verify that the Laser intensity was correct. It was not a question of the presence of the Laser. I could see the red laser and I could measure the RF off the optic assembly. I could not find any useful information on laser intensity on the web. So I disassembled my CD play so that I could read the laser strength of a working CD player. It showed 0.2mW. I measured the Bryston and it showed 0.6mW. What the hell?? More is better, right?? I decided to turn down the Bryston to 0.2mW and MAGIC!! It plays perfectly. It seems if the Laser is 3 times to strong it swamps the optics and will not read the disc. Who would have guessed?? By the way, the owner messed with the laser intensity trimpot before I got to it.

Today I want to tell you about a design fault in a very nice high end tube amp. We will not mention names as I am not interested in maligning any amp manufacturer. As you can see from the photos the workmanship is wonderful point to point hand wiring. But I am sorry to say they completely screwed up the output tube biasing. This unit has 4 output tubes and it is Cathode biased. Cathode biased amps always run hot but this thing was insane and was absolutely cooking the output tubes in the 30W position. So we had to fix that. Changing the Cathode resistors (shown in the photo as the 2 large black resistors) is out of the question. Doing this will change the power output and the tone of the amp. So to cool off the Cathode bias what we do is add some Grid Bias. I added 9V of Grid bias and brought the idle current down to 22mA. (See Photo) Testing after that showed we still had a huge stability problem when I drove the amp to clipping. I fought with this forever. If you come to my shop and see me ba****ck it is because I lost my shirt on this amp. But I figured it out!! WOOHOO. Turns out when you cathode bias 4 output tubes you have to use 2 sets of bias resistors. On set for each push pull pair. If you do not do this then the current of parallel tubes with interfere with each other and destabilize the amp. I calculated the correct Grid resistor values and ordered them. Installed them (Photo with Blue Caps) and WOOHOO. The amp works perfect.
