If you landed on your own website knowing nothing about your business, would you understand why you should hire yourself?

You would have no knowledge of the conversations behind the services, the experience behind the qualifications or the care that goes into the work. You would have whatever is on the screen to help you decide.

Would that be enough?

Take a look at the first section of your home page. Does it explain what you do, who you help and why someone should keep reading? Or could the same words describe a dozen other businesses?

“Quality service” and “experienced professionals” might be true, but they leave a prospective customer with plenty of unanswered questions.

What would you need to read before you felt this business was worth contacting?

What can’t wait until 2027?

Most business owners have something they know needs attention. It may be a financial issue, a system that no longer works, marketing that is not producing enough, an employee concern, a difficult decision or simply too many responsibilities resting on one person.

It is easy to keep pushing these issues down the list while dealing with whatever needs attention today. Eventually, something has to change.

Small Business Unfiltered gives business owners an opportunity to bring those concerns into an honest conversation with others who understand the pressure of running a business.

There will be no presentation or sales pitch. Bring the issue you have been thinking about, hear how other owners are handling similar situations and leave with a different perspective on what you need to address.

Is it just me, or has running a business become harder?

There always seems to be something new demanding our attention. Costs keep changing, customers are taking longer to make decisions, good employees can be difficult to find, technology never stops moving, and now we are expected to understand how AI fits into everything.

Meanwhile, the day-to-day work still needs to get done.

These are the conversations we will be having at Small Business Unfiltered. There will be no presentation or sales pitch. It will be an honest discussion among business owners about what we are experiencing, what we have tried and what we have learned along the way.

What is the biggest issue taking up your attention in the business right now?

Running a business can feel isolating, especially when you are the person making the decisions, paying the bills and carrying the responsibility when things do not go according to plan.

During Small Business Week, I’m bringing business owners together for Small Business Unfiltered—an honest, moderated conversation about what is really happening inside our businesses.

This is not a webinar, presentation or sales event. It is an opportunity to talk openly about the challenges we are facing, hear how other owners are handling similar situations and gain a different perspective on the decisions we are carrying into 2027.

We may talk about cash flow, rising costs, marketing, sales, staffing, technology, AI, changing customer behaviour, work-life balance and anything else participants bring to the conversation.

You do not need to arrive with answers. Bring a question, an experience or a willingness to listen and contribute.

11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. ET
Free to attend. Registration is required.

Stop playing with AI. Start putting it to work.
"AI Beyond Posts, Pictures, and Prompts"

Most business owners have experimented with AI. Maybe you used it to write an email, create a social media post, brainstorm an idea or generate an image.

But that's only the beginning.

Join Debi Katsmar of Prowl Communications for a practical lunch and learn exploring what AI can really do for your business beyond content creation.

Key learning points:
- Using AI for research, sales prep, customer service, meetings and follow ups
- How AI can effectively be deployed for operations, documentation, data analysis, decision-making, and repetitive day-to-day tasks.
- Learn how AI can work with the systems and tools you already use to save time and efficiency.

Join us: September 9th from Noon to 1:30 p.m. at Sideline Social in St. Catharines.

Cash at the door: $5 for members/ $9 for non-members.

Do you have an ugly comfy chair in your business?
You know the one. It has been there forever, it does not really fit anymore, and if you were buying furniture today there is no chance you would choose it. But it is comfortable, everyone is used to it, and getting rid of it feels like more trouble than keeping it.

Businesses have ugly comfy chairs too.

It might be an outdated process everyone works around, a system you have outgrown, marketing you keep doing because you have always done it, or a way of handling things that made perfect sense five years ago.

You know it needs to change. Your team probably knows it too. But it is familiar, and familiar is comfortable.

The problem is, your business cannot move forward if every decision is based on keeping everyone comfortable.

Sometimes you have to get rid of the ugly chair.

Out and About with Business Builders Niagara!

Last week, Mackenzie and I enjoyed dinner, cocktails and plenty of great conversation at the Business Builders Niagara summer social.

Networking doesn’t always have to happen across a boardroom table. Sometimes, sharing a meal in a relaxed setting is the perfect way to strengthen the relationships behind the referrals.

Business Builders Niagara is a wonderful group of people who genuinely support one another and actively help grow each other’s businesses. It is always a pleasure to be part of it—especially when good food and cocktails are involved!

When You Know Something Isn’t Working

Something in the business isn’t working. But what?

Sales are inconsistent. Marketing feels scattered. The team is busy, but progress is harder to see. You may be investing in tools, campaigns or people without being completely sure where the real problem sits.

That is often when an outside perspective helps.

At Prowl Communications, our consulting work looks beyond one tactic or department. We look at how your marketing, sales, systems, operations and business goals are working together — or where they are not.

Sometimes the answer is more marketing. Sometimes it isn’t.

That is exactly why we created the Growth Gap Assessment™ — to help identify where the real gaps are before deciding what needs fixing next.

Something's Not Right.
Over the years, I've had the privilege of working with hundreds of business owners, and while every business is different, one conversation comes up again and again. It usually starts with someone saying, "I know something isn't working, but I can't put my finger on it." Sometimes they think it's marketing. Sometimes they think it's their website, their sales process or even their staff. The interesting part is that what they think is wrong isn't always where the real opportunity lies. After more than forty years in business, I've learned that some of the most important decisions are made before anyone starts talking about solutions.

"I Know Something Isn't Working... I Just Can't Put My Finger on It."

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that sentence over the years, I could probably retire.

It doesn't always come out exactly like that, of course. Sometimes it's, "We're working harder than ever, but we don't seem to be getting ahead." Other times it's, "We've spent money on marketing, but nothing seems to have changed." I've even had people sit down across from me and simply say, "I don't know what's wrong. I just know something isn't."
