We frequently get calls from clients who have encrypted their data asking if we can recover the data after they have forgotten their login password and no longer have access to the account that the encrytpion is tied to in cases like Bitlocker.
Contrary to what you see on TV, there is no back door to decrypt your drive. It would only be through brute force using an automated algorithm to try every letter, number and symbol combination that one might be able to get past the encryption. However, depending on the complexity of the password set, that process could take decades to crack and, in many cases, exceed the maximum number of failed attempts permitted on the device, such as an iPhone.
Unfortunately, most systems are now encrypting your data by default and not giving adequate warning of the imporance of storing the encryption recovery key and passwords in a safe place or how critical it is to have a solid backup that can be accessed should the encrypted device fail.
Maybe, someday in the future, someone will find a security hole for your encrtypion, so it doesn't hurt to just set it aside in hopes that such a solution can be found.
