6 ways to make your resume stand out:
1. Visual
Aesthetic themes look amazing, but you want to make sure that your resume is clear and readable. Choose the right combination of colors, and use a font that is easy to read, depending on the position and the nature of the industry.
2. Be specific - add figures
Listing of skills and experience is important, BUT the showing aspect is at least equally, or more essential than the telling aspect. For example, if you were at a sales position, what was the contribution that you made for the company?
3. Action words
Avoid weak action words such as “learned”, “participated”, “contributed”; instead, make your contribution stand out by using strong action verbs such as “developed”, “facilitated”, “directed”, “chaired”, “managed”, etc.
4. Know the Context - Include the Right information ONLY
In North American context, be careful when you are tempted to include your personal info such as your photo, age, gender, etc. because it will lead to concerns regarding racism, ageism, sexism. However, there are also certain cultures that require this info, so the rule of thumb is to always Know the Context.
5. Customize to fit the role
Whether it is the visual or the holistic aspect, be sure to know what your employer might expect, and customize your resume accordingly. For example, a matching theme color would show that you take the time to match the company’s vibe, and don’t forget to also highlight the relevant skills and experiences you might have.
