Sadly, the topic of “you need the right keywords to be on top of the results page for SEO” is becoming a cliché. There are many other important factors that can aid you to be at the top or for people to find you faster. A high-quality website/landing page is very important and has to be filled with relevant content. It is not the people that choose what show on the search results, but the search engines take care of it.
Another thing, think of websites as people. Some “people” are famous and some are not. If you want to be famous so that everybody can see you, you need other people to mention you, and point at you, right? This is what we call link-building, and it is if not, unfortunately, the most effective method to rank high.
Back to the topic and to answer your question.
There are plenty of great tools out there that can help you find the most relevant and best keywords to your subject. “Google’s” keyword search and “Moz” keyword explorer are by far the two best tools I find when doing keyword research. But, jumping to the keyword research, It is best to see how your competition is doing and that is where you won’t go wrong with analytics tools like “semrush” which will provide you all the necessary info of others, including keywords used as well.
Last but not least, for social media users.
Manual Research. Key in different hashtags/keywords in Twitter/Instagram and see how many results you get for each hashtag, this method usually works the best.
