With search habits changing (thank you, AI) it’s essential that you update your measurement criteria to ensure your brand’s visibility is reliably tracked.

Firstly, you need to prioritize measuring brand mentions in LLM responses over the traffic you get from those responses.

Once you’ve adjusted to that change in priorities, it’s time to track a wide variety of plausible prompts aligned with topics relevant to your site. You should try to include branded, non-brand, and competitor-branded terms.

Then, pivot to metrics that provide the most accurate gauge of your presence across a large number of brand-relevant LLM responses, and track them over time.

The overlap between SEO and GEO is growing all the time, so it’s time to assess which tactics and priorities have shifted. Here’s what we’re seeing:

✔️ Brand matters more
✔️ Mentions matter more
✔️ Clicks matter less

We’ve broken down how AI search and traditional search really interact, and the five tactical shifts you need to make. Check it out: https://bit.ly/4slkZxL

SEO tracks keywords, GEO tracks prompts.

Prompts are typically very long-tail, highly specific queries where, due to their likelihood of being unique searches, search volume is currently less relevant for research purposes. To compensate, you should be tracking a variety of branded, non-branded, and competitor prompts across multiple industry topic areas.

To understand your true AI brand visibility, it’s important to scale up prompt tracking for GEO in the same way as keyword tracking for SEO.

As brand mentions become an essential metric, you need to make sure you are capturing all of the necessary data to inform your GEO strategy. Step one: knowing the difference between keywords and prompts.

With traditional SEO, you primarily care about your own site showing up on the SERP and, hopefully, getting the click. With GEO — and perhaps also with top-of-funnel SEO going forward — a click in the generated response is very unlikely, so you are playing primarily for brand exposure.

In other words, you care about the mention, rather than about the explicit linked citation. This means that in the grounding searches that underpin LLM responses, it’s less about who ranks, and more about whether your brand is mentioned in a meaningful way.

As AI search continues to grow in prominence, we’re hearing a lot more about how prompts compare to keywords. But what really sets them apart? 🤔

Keywords:
↳ Often shorter and broader in structure
↳ Google infers your intent and tries to serve the most relevant links
↳ Tracking is focused on specific terms and uses search volume

Prompts:
↳ Detailed, conversational, and multimodal (text, code, uploads)
↳ LLMs rely on the context you provide to generate an answer or perform a task
↳ Since prompts are typically unique, tracking is more focused on broader topics

We went from asking search engines for links to giving AI engines instructions. So, how often are you using AI for search?
