People get caught in scams and frauds because they under-estimate criminals and over-estimate their ability to detect attacks. We don’t expect criminals to be so well organized and well-resourced and we believe ourselves better than them, which is why we feel embarrassed and ashamed when we get caught out. We need to understand that many cyber-criminals are organized, sophisticated and agile; it is not a reflection of our intelligence but of their determination, stealth, and lack of moral and legal boundaries.

While data transmission is easier than ever, security is often an afterthought or is too cumbersome to be consistent. This is an element of OSINT investigations that I believe is increasingly vulnerable, and may have the effect of reducing the value and integrity of intelligence products over time. This, along with the ever-increasing potential for sensitive data to fall into the wrong hands or be tampered with during transmission, is putting clients, subjects and investigators at risk of suffering a broadening scope of security and data breaches.
