Lumber Prices Remained Flat, While Plywood Experienced Shocking Reversals

The usual mid-summer lull of lumber sales slow-down arrived as the calendar turned to August.

In the week ending July 31, 2026 the price of Western Spruce-Pine-Fir 2x4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$516 mfbm, which was up +$6, or +1% from the previous week when it was $510, said weekly forest products industry price guide newsletter Madison’s Lumber Reporter.
That week’s price was up +$21, or +4%, from one month ago when it was $495.

KEY TAKE-AWAYS:
• Western-SPF sawmills in the US maintained lead times as far out as the week of August 17th, with not much inventory for August 10th shipment.
• Buyers remained loathe to take anything resembling a long position.
• Sales of Western-SPF in Canada appeared to lose more momentum as summer vacations took precedence over booking new orders.
• Tight supply continued to drive firm or upward pricing in standard and premium grades.
• Price levels for Eastern-SPF were elusive to pin down since Eastern producers were in the midst of summer shutdowns.
• In most regions of North America, the ongoing situation of fewer large-diameter logs meant wides were only more scarce.
• Several sources referred to Southern Yellow Pine sales as “sloppy”.
• Sensing weakness, retail customers and other buyers felt they had leverage, thus pushed steep counter-offers.
• On the US northeastern seaboard, holes in buyers’ inventories were undeniable and growing.

Supply-Driven Undercurrent Keeps Lumber Prices Firm

As lumber sales and construction activity went into true summer slow-down, the ongoing situation of lack of solid wood inventory throughout the supply chain served to keep lumber prices firm.

In the week ending July 24, 2026, the price of benchmark softwood lumber item Western Spruce-Pine-Fir 2x4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$510 mfbm. This was up +$10, or +2%, from the previous week when it was $500, said weekly forest products industry price guide newsletter Madison’s Lumber Reporter.
That week’s price was up +$15, or +3%, from one month ago when it was $495.

KEY TAKE-AWAYS:
• For Western-SPF suppliers in the US the apparent summer slowdown was belied by strong commodity prices and ongoing limited supply.
• Many builders in key regions quietly admitted they were much busier than they expected for the time of year.
• Demand for Western-SPF in Canada decreased.
• Producers kept their inventories tightly controlled.
• Variable production schedules helped maintain healthy order files roughly in the range of two- to three-weeks.
• Eastern-SPF players pointed to climbing sawmill prices.
• Prompt options few and far between, as sawmill order files in the northeast were as far as four weeks in some cases.
• Demand for Southern Yellow Pine felt disconnected.
• Sawmill asking prices in the south slid on a weakening summer market.
• Eastern stocking wholesalers reported retail customers in the tri-state area stuck to their hand-to-mouth buying strategies.

Learning from Finland: Part II

Building more value from every tree

Study tours, government partnerships and industry collaborations are accelerating the exchange of ideas on fibre utilization, forest management and the bioeconomy.

Managing forests differently

One lesson repeatedly highlighted by Canadian visitors is Finland’s approach to commercial thinning.

Unlike B.C., where thinning is relatively uncommon, Finland revisits forests several times during a rotation, removing selected trees to improve the health, quality and value of the remaining stand.

Forestry consultant Ken Day, who has travelled to Finland three times to study its forestry practices, believes this is one of Canada’s biggest opportunities.

Learning from Finland: Part 1

Building more value from every tree

Study tours, government partnerships and industry collaborations are accelerating the exchange of ideas on fibre utilization, forest management and the bioeconomy.

As Canada's forest sector grapples with shrinking fibre supplies, devastating wildfires and growing pressure to create more value from every harvested tree, industry leaders are increasingly looking to Finland for ideas.

Lumber Demand Waned As Summer Doldrums Arrived

The most important thing to note for mid-July 2026 is that the benchmark Western S-P-F 2x4 price is equal to same week last year. As always, Madison’s is the first to point out such trends with lumber price changes, which provides industry with the best insight to make their own business plans.

In the week ending July 17, 2026 the price of Western Spruce-Pine-Fir 2x4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$500 mfbm, which flat from the previous week, said weekly forest products industry price guide newsletter Madison’s Lumber Reporter. That week’s price was up +$5, or +1%, from one month ago when it was $495.
Compared to the same week last year, when it was US$500 mfbm, the price of Western Spruce-Pine-Fir 2x4 #2&Btr KD (RL) for the week ending July 17, 2026 was flat. Compared to two years ago when it was $332, that week’s price was up +$168, or +51%.

KEY TAKE-AWAYS:
• Sellers of Western-SPF in the US enjoyed lively inquiry and takeaway early in the week.
• Purchasers continued to be focussed on short-term coverage rather than on building inventories.
• Manufacturer supply levels were still below average and order files were around two- to three-weeks.
• Buyers of Western-SPF in Canada were more circumspect than in previous weeks.
• Eastern-SPF sawmills maintained order files in a two- to three-week range.
• Buyers of Southern Yellow Pine reduced their activity to frequent fill-in trucks, covering only their immediate needs.
• Largely unforeseen bottlenecks and logistical problems influenced market direction heavily this year.
• Eastern stocking wholesalers continued to manage subpar inventory levels amid a shifting market.
