Hello friends! Have you joined us these past few weeks in our mini-series, Digiccino? We travelled to 2091, getting a glimpse of Alexa, the protagonist, and her reality of living in an era of digital foods.

We closely followed her journey with a new electronic cafe called Digiccino. We observed Digiccino’s tactics in attracting customers like Alexa and rode along with the ups and downs of Alexa’s reactions to Digiccino. At the end of it all, the two settle on a stable, cheerful relationship.

Now you might be wondering - what did Digiccino do to make it work?

Christie Wong, a senior UX/UI designer Digitalist North America and the creator of the series, answers this question by providing an in-depth analysis of the designs in this series. Not only does she touch upon the UX behind each post, but she also introduces a fundamental concept that Digiccino successfully applied to retain customers like Alexa. A behind-the-scenes look you won't want to miss.

Do you have an idea of what it is?

Read on to find out more, and then let us know what you think!

Sit back and hang tight. We have reached the finale of our mini-series, Digiccino! Set in the year 2091, our protagonist Alexa has just learned about a magical offer she could not refuse - earning twice the points on a p***y digitized coffee from Digiccino.

Alexa was delighted to see that the offer was exclusive for Digiccino members only - they certainly did know how to make a customer happy! Just as she was about to hit the Order button, she noticed a helpful tidbit about using their app for a better experience. Hmm, why not?

Swiftly, she downloaded the app and, in one seamless experience, ordered a salted caramel mocha. Wow, that could not be easier! The mocha arrived in the blink of an eye (teleported, really), and she knew from here on out, she would order from Digiccino more frequently. Not to mention, the app itself was looking pretty nifty and razor-sharp.

Fast forward to a balmy summer evening in 2092 - Alexa heard a chime from her phone as she was lying on her couch. Picking up her phone, she saw a notification from her favourite cafe, Digiccino. What’s this?! A mysterious little gift to celebrate her 1st year with them?! How sweet! She was ecstatic by the surprise token and was innately intrigued by what the present could be.

The challenge:
As a new electronic cafe, Digiccino wants to show appreciation and create delight for their most loyal customers.

Which design do you think is more user-friendly for Alexa?

1. If you gravitate to the left, react with the Like emoji.
2. If you gravitate to the right, respond with the Love emoji.
3. Most importantly, if you spot other critical issues, we would love to hear from you in the comments!

And that’s a wrap! Did you enjoy this mini-series? Have questions about how to design a memorable customer experience like Digiccino? Stay tuned for a blog post that dives deeper into the series and walks you through principles that you can apply at your own organization.

Welcome, friends, to the climax of our mini-series, Digiccino! We last left off in 2091, where our protagonist, Alexa, debated whether she should join the loyalty program of a new electronic cafe, Digiccino.

Why not? She thought. She could always leave the program if Digiccino did something that she didn’t like. Plus, they had already pre-filled her information into the form—all she had to do was create a password. Easy-Peasy.

Once completed, she put down her phone to prepare for her meeting, and within seconds, had utterly forgotten about Digiccino.

A few weeks later, on another mundane Monday, Alexa thought about where to order her coffee. Lately, the drinks from her favourite cafe, Electresso, had this terrible metallic aftertaste. No, she did not want to start her week off with another zingy latte.
Her phone suddenly buzzed, and she saw that it was an email from Digiccino. Oh right, she had tried this cafe a while back! Her eyes quickly skimmed the notification - Earn twice the points today! Wow, she thought. Without further hesitation, Alexa opened the email.

The challenge:
As a new electronic cafe, Digiccino wants to retain its customers.

Which design do you think is more user-friendly for Alexa? Is the layout actionable? Is the content enticing enough to make her want to order a drink or use the app?

1. If you gravitate to the left, react with the Like emoji.
2. If you gravitate to the right, respond with the Love emoji.
3. Most importantly, if you spot other critical issues, we would love to hear from you in the comments!

Want to know if Digiccino successfully persuades Alexa? Stay tuned for the last post of the mini-series!

Welcome to part 2 of our mini-series, Digiccino! But first, a little recap:

Set in 2091, when humans consumed food in a digital format, our protagonist, Alexa, has just locked down her latte of choice at a new electronic cafe called Digiccino (a digital cafe that offers over 1000 digitized choices for the new digital customer).

Now the story continues.

After being hugely frustrated that she could not select multiple add-ons, Alexa finally places her order. She looks at the time, only to realize she has 5 minutes before her important meeting with Jarvis (boss-man).

As Alexa is about to put down her phone, she suddenly sees that this particular latte purchase has gained her an intriguing 50 points, with a caveat of signing up. Ooo! Should she sign up to keep her points? Would she order from Digiccino again? Alexa's head was spinning: She was an avid coffee drinker, but she was also very selective - she loathed coffee shops with poor customer service and spammy emails.

The challenge:
As a new electronic cafe, Digiccino's goal is to have long-term, loyal customers.

Which design do you think is more user-friendly for Alexa? Do the font sizes, layout, and information presented encourage her to sign up for Digiccino's loyalty program?

1. If you gravitate to the left, react with the Like emoji.
2. If you gravitate to the right, respond with the Love emoji.
3. Most importantly, if you spot other critical issues, we would love to hear from you in the comments!

Want to know if Digiccino makes it onto Alexa's list of approved coffee shops? Stay tuned for the next post of our 4-part series!

Hello friends, and welcome to our new mini-series where we dive into a world of clicking, swiping, finger-friendly, user-first interactions!

But first — we must induce you into a state of UX-comatose.

It is the year 2091. Ever since the breakthrough in biotechnology that allowed humans to consume food in a digital format, humans no longer went grocery shopping, worried about their health, or ate from those atrocious fast food restaurants. No, life was much easier with digital foods.

Monday morning arrives, and Alexa is in dire need of a little pick me up. Her friend Siri recommends a new electronic cafe called “Digiccino.” After swiping through a thousand options, Alexa decides to try the cookies & cream latte.

Here is where the challenge begins:
As a new electronic cafe, it is mission critical that Digiccino can attract and retain customers.

Which design do you think is more user-friendly for Alexa? Does the font, colour contrast, alignment, choice of components satisfy her digital taste buds?

1. If you gravitate to the left, react with the Like emoji.
2. If you gravitate to the right, respond with the Love emoji.
3. Most importantly, if you spot other critical issues, we would love to hear from you in the comments!

Want to know what happens next on Alexa’s journey with Digiccino? Stay tuned for the next post of our 4-part series!

Meet Jussi!

🧑‍💻 You might find Jussi casually telling you that a day in his life as a Lead Software Developer is about helping others write better code or striving to write better code himself! But what Jussi won't tell you is that he is actively changing the world for the better. That assistive device you turn to in the morning, the app that connects you to your digital community, or that program that intelligently monitors your well-being is something he more than dabbles in as a computer mastermind. It is no wonder he has earned the moniker of 'Batman' at Digitalist!

🦾 For Jussi, the best part about his job is bringing products to life! Jussi enjoys seeing the potential of an idea and its designs, and then he loves getting hands-on with the whole application's actual implementation—a great feeling.

💙 What is most fun at Digitalist?
"If you need to ask, then you have yet to join us. It is the infamous BBQ and Karaoke events, of course!" 'Singing Jussi' can be found in our throwback archives. (Though you didn't hear it from us.)

🧗🏼‍♂️ Never behind the scenes and more active than you think—Jussi is at his best when he is deep in "survival mode." Frankly, it isn't easy catching up with an avid hiker, motorcycle rider, tennis pro, and overnight backpacker. Perhaps it is his Finnish blood, but Jussi finds joy when plunging in waters of below-freezing temperatures!

🏅 Always up for the challenge, Jussi is an impressive and exceptional Lead Software Developer who inspires us daily with his active and healthy habits of Scandinavia. We are lucky to have him, our very own Digi-Batman.

Our world is becoming more specialized. How are forward-thinking real-estate companies like Bosa Properties enhancing physical spaces with digital experiences? Check out the Bosa Properties case study if you have not already.

When encountering a household name like Bosa Properties, famous, up-and-coming projects like "Fifteen-Fifteen," or renowned architects like Büro Ole Scheeren (who augment, energize our civic/natural spaces) come to our mind. Bosa Properties is undoubtedly changing the Vancouver skyline, bringing fresh design perspectives and premium experiences to our everyday space.

However, their vision does not stop there. These days, Bosa Properties is complimenting the physical space by thinking digital.

Here is your first inside look:

Bosa Properties has been collaborating with Digitalist North America on developing an innovative customer portal, providing homeowners, tenants, and property managers a single place to manage their homes through their web and mobile devices. Part of this digital strategy involves integrating a comprehensive design system.

Think of this design system as a single source of truth, one that scales services, strengthens the brand, increases brand equity and the company's operation and purpose.

To learn more about this exciting initiative with Bosa Properties and to get a sneak peek at how the project expanded into another inspiring project for BlueSkyProperties (their newest enterprise), check out the case study here:

If you have not checked out how Pekka Murto breaks down strategy for us, read on, friends. A must-read.

It’s what sets Apple apart from all the other big tech companies.
It’s why everyone loves the simple, minimalistic look and feel of Muji products.
It’s how Nintendo is still in the game though they were originally a trading card company.

It’s what makes or breaks a company.

Strategy.

And everyone knows what strategy is, right?

This is the question posed by Pekka Murto, a senior design researcher & service designer at Digitalist Group Plc. Looking at our own organizations and those around us, do we truly understand what strategy is? How do you come up with one? How do you know that it will bring success to your company?

As boxer Mike Tyson once said, “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

But not to worry. Pekka gives us the 5 P’s of how to look at strategy in his article. Do you know what they are?

Read on to find out more, and then let us know what you think!

The time has arrived for an epic Throwback Thursday.
Enter MAN.
As the man awakens on a smoky and apocalyptic landscape, you can't help but wonder how he got there.

Step into the awe-inspiring mythology of Valhalla, the great hall of Asgard, ruled over by the God Odin, a promised afterlife for the bravest of warriors and Vikings of valour.

Do not be mistaken. Valhalla is no 21'st century, re-imagined Marvel multiverse; Valhalla is the true spirit of Nordic legends. And in this legend, our partnering studio, Grow, developed a concept called "Brotherhood" to conjure this mysterious dark herb liqueur in an even more ominous dark bottle to life (crafted by Koskenkorva Vodka).

Imagine a brave and fateful story of three brothers' violent journey, where they fight and put their brotherhood to the ultimate test. As they uncover the mysteries of the Nordic forest and form the ultimate warrior potion, they prove their worth for entry into the eternal community of Valhalla, a place to fight and feast, a glorious afterlife for the fearless.

Now, this is next-level brand awareness and storytelling in a bottle. Valhalla is no ordinary liqueur; it is a potent spirit that encapsulates fantastic Norse mythology, one that sparks your imagination, brings your friends together, tickles your taste buds, and causes hair-raising goosebumps.

A legend and brand, to be continued.

Check out the incredible video in our comments.

Blindfold yourself. What do you experience? Perhaps you smell buttery toast and hear the sizzling sounds of eggs hitting the cast-iron skillet in the morning. Maybe you hear the jingling of Benji's dog collar as you brush through his bristly and clumpy hair. And perhaps you take note that your new toothpaste is more frothy than usual.

As we speed into a technologically savvy future, a world where AR, VR, assistive devices and digital screens flood our spaces, we cannot help but notice that many of our product experiences are still primarily visual and sound-based.

‘Paper is for Real,’ an initiative by the imaginative thinkers of Munken by Arctic Paper , Grow, and creative mastermind Johan Arensberg, reminds us that design is indeed a multi-sensory methodology. Unique experiences can still occur with something as simple and beautiful as a paper's tactile and sensory properties. 'Paper is for real' is an award-winning series of inspirational books about the human receptors—taste, smell, sight, hearing, touch, intuition. And through a variety of printing techniques, it tickles all our senses over and above the image yonder.

Notable design educators, writers and critics, Ellen Lupton and Andrea Lipps, say it most thoughtfully and artfully when designing beyond vision: “Sensory design supports everyone’s opportunity to receive information, explore the world, and experience joy, wonder and social connections, regardless of our sensory abilities.”

—Inspiring words to live by when building for an inclusive future.
