My next stop (did you miss me?) is less of a city and more of a whole way of life: Ontario Cottage Country.
Think Muskoka, Georgian Bay, the Kawarthas, Haliburton. All those pretty lake-dotted communities where summer weekends leads to putting up a "Summer Cottage" sign in your back porch at home because you're trying to claw back the feeling of being At The Lake.
There’s something special about this part of Ontario, and anyone from there knows it. The granite shorelines, pine trees, old boathouses, quiet roads, little towns, and lakes that seem to go on forever make it feel completely removed from city life, even though so many people escape here from the GTA every weekend.
And while “cottage country” might sound like purely a summer destination, these communities are very much alive year-round. There are permanent residents, local businesses, generations of families with deep roots in the area, and a real estate market that comes with its own quirks — waterfront access, docks, septic systems, seasonal roads, island properties... definitely not your average suburban transaction.
It’s also one of those places where a real estate agent’s local knowledge matters a lot. Knowing the difference between two nearby lakes, understanding how a property is accessed in February, or knowing whether that dreamy shoreline is actually practical can completely change a buying decision.
Personally, I understand the appeal. Give me a little cottage, a dock, some trees, and a coffee somewhere near the water and I might become your new housemate & never leave. 😌
What’s your favourite part of Ontario Cottage Country — Muskoka, Georgian Bay, the Kawarthas, Haliburton, or somewhere I missed?
