When I first started in cybersecurity, I thought I had to know everything about everything before I could even apply for a job. 🤦‍♂️

"I don't have a tech background; is the bootcamp even for me?"

That was what someone told me when they reached out to ask about my cybersecurity bootcamp. I get this question more than any other. So let me be direct.

❌ If you've never worked in or around technology professionally, this probably isn't the right first step. The Security+ isn't entry-level in the sense of zero knowledge.

However:
✅ If you've worked in IT support, networking, help desk, or any adjacent technical role — you're closer to ready than you think.
✅ If you come from a non-IT career but you're genuinely comfortable with technology, you're motivated to figure things out, and you can realistically commit 8–10 hours a week — this is doable.

The curriculum is rigorous. Our job isn't to make it easier; it's to make it structured, supported, and achievable.

The question isn't whether you have the perfect background. The question is whether you have the commitment.

People ask me: "What can I actually do with a CompTIA + ?"

Here's the honest answer — these are the roles Security+ opens the door to:
🔹 SOC Analyst (Tier 1/2) — Monitor and respond to security alerts in real time
🔹 Security Administrator — Manage firewalls, access controls, and identity systems
🔹 Network Security Technician — Protect infrastructure, switches, and endpoints
🔹 IT Auditor — Assess risk and compliance for organizations
🔹 Cybersecurity Analyst — Threat hunting, vulnerability management, detection
🔹 Cloud Security Specialist — Secure AWS, Azure, or GCP environments

For US DoD contractors, Security+ satisfies DoD 8570 requirements — meaning it's literally a condition of employment for many federal IT roles.

In Canada, financial institutions, federal agencies, healthcare IT, and telecom organizations increasingly require or strongly prefer it for entry-level cybersecurity roles.

The cert alone won't land you the job.

One of my recent bootcamp students (let's call her Brandy) came into the bootcamp as a healthcare records assistant.

Midway through the cohort, I asked what surprised her most.
