Quick question:
When was the last time your team actually tested your response plan?

In our latest episode, we unpack why “having a plan” and “being prepared” are two very different things.

If you’re building, leading, or scaling in tech, this one’s worth your time.

Let me ask you something directly. 👀

Do you have a mentor? Most people in this community will say yes. 🙋🏾‍♀️

Do you have a sponsor? That's where it gets quieter. 🤔

In our International Women's Day episode, Dawn Butler, MBA, CISSP draws a distinction that I think is one of the most important — and most overlooked — conversations in the cybersecurity talent discussion right now:

A mentor gives you guidance. A sponsor gives you access. 🔑

A mentor helps you get better at your job. A sponsor puts their reputation on the line to open the door to your next one. 🚪

And for women and people of colour navigating an industry where networks and informal referrals still drive a disproportionate share of career-defining opportunities — the absence of sponsorship isn't just a personal gap. It's a structural one. 🛡️

Dawn speaks from experience here — both as someone who had to find her own path without always having the right people in her corner, and as someone who has since made it a deliberate part of her leadership practice to sponsor others coming up behind her. 💪🏾

What she says about why sponsorship is so rare — and what it actually costs the industry when talented people plateau not because of skill but because of visibility — is the part of this conversation I keep coming back to. 🎙️

This episode is for: 👇🏾
🌱 Early-career professionals who are being mentored but not yet sponsored — and need to understand the difference
👥 Mid-career leaders who have the platform to sponsor someone right now and haven't thought about it that way
🔐 Anyone building talent pipelines in cybersecurity who wants to understand why diverse professionals keep stalling at the same career stages

🎧 Watch or listen here: https://youtu.be/EJUyCLQOZ4M

💬 Two questions — answer either or both:
If you've been sponsored: What did it look like in practice — and how did it change your trajectory?
If you're in a position to sponsor someone: What's stopped you from doing it more deliberately?

I'll start in the comments. 👇🏾

Here's something Dawn Butler said in our latest episode that I haven't been able to stop thinking about: 💭

"Technical skills get you in the room. People skills determine how far you go in it."

She's right.

And the cybersecurity industry hasn't fully reckoned with what that means — especially for women and people of colour who are told, over and over, to keep stacking certifications as the answer to every career barrier they hit. 📜

In this International Women's Day episode of The Cybersec Migrant, Dawn Butler, MBA, CISSP, with over 30 years in the industry — makes a case that goes beyond the usual IWD conversation:

That the skills gap isn't just a pipeline problem. It's a retention and development problem.

And until we treat communication, empathy, and relationship-building as core leadership competencies — not soft extras — we'll keep losing talented people from an industry that can't afford to lose them. 🛡️

This episode is for:
👩🏾‍💻 Practitioners wondering whether there's a ceiling above them
👥 Leaders who want to build teams that are both diverse and genuinely resilient
🌱 Anyone mentoring the next generation of security professionals

🎧 Watch or listen on YouTube, Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts.

💬 Tell me this: did anyone ever tell you early in your career that soft skills would matter as much as — or more than — your technical certifications? Or did you have to figure that out the hard way?

Most companies think they’re secure.

Until they’re not.

In this episode, I sit down with a Senior Strategic Security Consultant at Mandiant to talk about what really happens when cyber plans meet real-world pressure.

We get into:
✔️ Compliance vs readiness
✔️ Incident response realities
✔️ Leadership blind spots
✔️ Building true resilience

We also talk about her experience as a and professional in the cyber industry. Very relevant as we celebrate this year's International Women's Day.

If you work in tech — not just cybersecurity — this conversation will hit home.
