1,500 pounds of fresh food grown above the Vancouver skyline every single year. 🌱

That's the impact of the YWCA Crabtree Corner rooftop garden — and we got to be a small part of it as volunteers. From weeding to watching the harvest make its way to community members who need it most, it's a reminder of what showing up actually looks like.

This one's close to our hearts. 🩵

From the very beginning, volunteering at the Crabtree Corner Community Kitchen has been a Traction Rec tradition. Every year, our team heads to Vancouver's Downtown Eastside to cook fresh breakfasts and serve our community.

Crabtree Corner is a welcoming community and resource centre for women and families in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. They provide free nutritious meals five days a week (many of which are made fresh from their own rooftop garden 🌱), free and subsidized child care, transitional housing for pregnant and parenting women, Indigenous cultural programming, and wraparound support for women who have experienced abuse. They meet people where they are, with warmth and without judgment.

When families started registering through a brand new system before it even officially launched and not a single confused phone call came in... we knew something special had happened. 🕺

For the Greater Philadelphia YMCA, that moment said everything.

Thousands of families across 7 counties depend on their child care programs every single year. Behind the scenes, staff were buried in paperwork, manual waitlists, and disconnected systems. Spending more time on admin than on the people they were there to serve.

Plus! The billing complexity alone was no joke. A single family could be enrolled in Philly Pre-K at zero cost, receiving a subsidy for wraparound care, and managing multiple program fees – all at once. That's a lot of moving pieces to get right for every single family.

This complexity meant they needed more than just a software solution, they needed a partner who would show up and actually do the work with them.

That's where Traction Rec came in! We built custom workflows around their exact subsidy structures and made sure not one family slipped through the cracks.

Six months in, staff were confident, families are registering independently, and leadership finally has real visibility into programs that once ran on spreadsheets.

The work the Greater Philadelphia YMCA does for their communities every single day is wicked cool – and we are so proud to be part of it.
