🚨 New LMIA Rules in Canada – April 2026 🇨🇦
Starting April 1, 2026, Canada has introduced important changes to the LMIA process—especially for low-wage positions 👇
🔹 Longer advertising requirement
Employers must now advertise jobs for at least 8 consecutive weeks (previously 4 weeks) before applying for an LMIA
🔹 New focus on youth hiring
Employers must show clear efforts to recruit young Canadians as part of their hiring process
🔹 Rural employers get flexibility
In some regions, eligible rural employers can hire up to 15% low-wage foreign workers (up from 10%) until March 2027
🔹 Stricter overall process
These changes make LMIA applications more demanding, requiring better planning, documentation, and proof that no Canadian workers are available
📊 What does this mean?
Canada is tightening LMIA rules to prioritize local workers, while still supporting labour shortages in rural areas.
💡 For applicants:
LMIA-based jobs may take longer to process
Employers will be more selective
Exploring LMIA-exempt pathways is more important than ever
