Earlier this year, we were proud to launch a new website for Touretteshero — a disabled-led organisation using creativity, humour, research and cultural practice to challenge perceptions of Tourette’s and create a more inclusive world 💙

As part of Tourette’s Awareness Month, we wanted to celebrate the incredible work of Jess Thom and the whole Touretteshero team, who continue to change conversations around Tourette’s through art, storytelling, performance and advocacy.

Working with Touretteshero on their new digital platform was a meaningful project for us at Surface Impression, helping bring their vibrant identity, mission and community-focused work to life online.

The mobile screen features a hero image of a person in a superhero costume with the text “Changing the world one ticket at a time”. The laptop screens show “What We Do” and “Events” pages with images of people in costume and a colourful festival-style background.

For World Heritage Day, we’d like to highlight a project that explores a historic Toronto neighbourhood through a mobile first website walking tour. It brings together archival research, storytelling and location-based design to guide people through the area at their own pace.

The experience lives within Heritage Toronto's recently relaunched website, which has been thoughtfully rebuilt to be more accessible, flexible and easier to maintain over time. The platform includes structured tour maps with clearly defined stops, supported by an editable framework that helps keep content accurate, shareable and evolving.

The design is intuitive and easy to navigate, while still carefully considered in how it supports exploration and engagement. It also leaves room for deeper interactivity and richer moments of connection as it continues to grow.

If you’re attending the Museums Canada conference in St. John’s you’re in for a treat! Surface Impression will be collecting and analysing data throughout the event to create a real-time dashboard. We’re pulling in the data we collected last year as well, so we can track changes in the sector over the 12 months and answer some of the questions that were posed in Calgary. We’ll be starting the event off with a “how to” data workshop on April 19 and continuing that thread through all the day events throughout the 3 days. We’ll be sharing the results at the end of Tuesday so keep an eye out! #

We are 25!

We remember the Flash intros you had to wait for and sometimes skip. We built websites with tables. We coded through dial-up and waited and waited.

Since then we’ve watched the web grow from static pages to responsive design, from desktop screens to the devices in our pockets, from simple websites to platforms that think, adapt and learn. We’re older than YouTube and yes, some of us were on MySpace!

As the web became more accessible and inclusive, we grew with it. We’ve helped clients make better use of their data, understand its value and turn websites into stronger digital experiences.

What started in a small office in Brighton has become an international company, with teams and projects spanning Brighton, Toronto, New York and beyond.

We’re still curious. Still evolving. Still building.

Happy anniversary, Surface Impression. Here’s to the next chapter.

Today we recognise International Mother Language Day, a moment led by UNESCO to celebrate linguistic diversity around the world.

A mother language is often the first language we grow up with — sometimes one, sometimes more. It connects people to family histories, cultural knowledge and collective memory.

When a language stops being passed from one generation to the next, it becomes vulnerable. When the last fluent speakers are gone, it is considered extinct. And with it, a unique way of seeing and understanding the world can disappear.

Protecting language diversity isn’t just about words. It’s about safeguarding heritage, identity and collective knowledge.

Every language matters. Every voice counts.

Open Theatre Company is a non-verbal theatre company that works with young people with learning disabilities as creative partners. Together, they shape the work, question ideas and help decide what comes next.

Earlier last year, it felt like the right time for a new website — one that better reflects Open Theatre’s values, energy and way of working. In close collaboration with the Open Theatre team, we shaped a site that feels true to who they are and where they’re heading.

The result is a lively, welcoming website with accessibility at its heart. User testing with people who have lived experience of access needs helped refine journeys, strengthen the visual design and shape features that support everyone.

Three smaller phones line the right edge, while a larger phone on the left takes centre stage, showing the homepage with a hero image of two people laughing together and the quote “Open Theatre is both everything and nothing else we have ever experienced before.”

Now that we are well into December it feels like a good moment to pause and look back on the year just gone. At Surface Impression 2025 has been filled with a mix of familiar work and new opportunities and we are truly grateful for all of it.

Over the year our work has connected us with projects, partners and teams in many different places. The map below shows where our work has taken shape through collaborations, projects, events and the people we work with. Being able to meet some of you in person for meetings or conferences has been a real highlight.

Above all we are thankful to the charitable, cultural, educational and nonprofit organisations who trusted us to support their work. Playing even a small part in helping further your missions through digital experiences and data insights has been a genuine privilege.

As the year draws to a close we are grateful for all we have shared and created and we look forward to continuing that work together in 2026.

Here’s something we’re really proud to have been part of!

The National AccessArts Centre presented by TD Ready Commitment in Alberta has just launched an exciting new chapter – a capital campaign to raise the final $7M needed to complete their accessible arts learning campus in the heart of Calgary.

This new campus will serve as a vibrant cultural landmark, hosting community events, performing arts productions and offering welcoming outdoor spaces for everyone to gather and connect.

Explore the project and learn how you can support this inspiring initiative.
